Sultan High School is located in the small town of Sultan, Washington, only about 40 miles from Seattle. It is located between the Cascade Mountain Range and the Sky Valley, along the Sultan River and the Skykomish River.

Sultan High School first opened its doors in 1888. First starting in a building where the Sultan Middle School stands, they built a new high school in 1987, located only 2 blocks from the old location.

[edit] The City of Sultan

The city of Sultan was named after an ancient Indian chief that lived in the school’s area, Chief Sultan John. In the country of Turkey, the title of “Sultan” is given to their ruler of the country. This is how Sultan High School got the mascot of the “Turks”.

Sultan High School consists of buildings in an open campus layout. Classrooms surround a courtyard that connects a majority of all classrooms. The campus consists of a 21 classrooms, 9 portables, a top of the line weight room, a gym, a wrestling room, a courtyard, a stage, and a music room.

[edit] Sports Complex

Sultan High School has a large on-campus sports facility. Football, track, and soccer all use the track and football field area. It is a large field with covered grandstands that hold a concession stand in the back. Baseball uses the Mariner-sponsored baseball field. Softball uses the newly renovated softball field and batting cages. The football team also uses the state of the art weight room and practice field. Boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, as well as the volleyball team, play on their hardwood courts located on the lower floor of Sultan High School. Wrestlers love to practice in the padded wrestling room with brand new wrestling mats. The cross country team runs at the local Osprey Park. It has a maze of trails that are all near the scenic Sultan River. Both boys’ and girls’ soccer practice and occasionally play at Osprey Park. Lastly, the golf teams use the Blue Boy Golf Course, located off Old Owen Road.

Sultan Senior High School is a member of the Cascade Conference and classified a as a 2A school by the WIAA. Competing against the schools of Cedarcrest, Granite Falls, Lakewood, King's Garden, Coupeville, South Whidbey, and Archbishop Murphy.

Sultan is known in a big way for its outstanding achievements in its music department. There are groups that required auditions and groups that are taken as a credited class. All musical activities are headed by Jill Sumpter.

Wind Ensemble, Women’s Choir, and Concert Choir. All three groups compete at contests, never scoring lower than a 3.

[edit] Marching Band

This marching band competes at 3 to 4 field show competitions in the fall and 2 to 3 parades in the spring every year, placing in the highest ratings at each competition attended. In 2006, the Turk Marching Band headed a parade at Disneyland in 2006 and Victoria, Canada in the spring of 2007 and 2008. The marching band exceeds over many other bands. They took the Generals Award at Auburn an fall '06. They also won the sweepstakes award in the Wenatchee parade in the spring of '08 and took 1st place in their division. Many of there shows included Jesus Christ Superstar, Ray, On Leave, and Grease. They were also state champions at one point!

Producing such musicals as Guys and Dolls, The Sound of Music, "My Fair Lady", and "Bye Bye Birdie", the drama department keeps growing year after year. Musical auditions always start at the beginning of winter sports season, and the first practices soon to follow. A musical from Sultan Senior High School is usually put on during early March.

This band is a select group of band members that play a jazz style of music. They have traveled to Disneyland and Canada, earning standing ovations from the crowds.

A competing choir, the Honor Choir performs at contests, where they quiet frequently earn the highest score, a solid 1. Auditions are required.

Performing music ranging through the decades, this great group of singers and dancers, usually being around 10 girls and 10 boys, are always a favorite at musical events. Auditions are required.

Frequently being named “Best Color Guard” at competitions, this group consists of 9 to 16 girls or boys each season. Auditions are required.

Sultan Senior High School offers an array of extracurricular clubs.

[edit] Associated Student Body (ASB)

This ASB organization consists of a president, vice-president, secretary/treasurer, and ASB representative from each grade. As well as school-wide ASB president, ASB vice-president, ASB secretary, ASB treasurer, and ASB business manager.

These officers are in charge of maintain the budget of all sports, clubs, and activities. They met once a week to approve such things as POs and fundraiser requests. They are also in charge of all general ASB issues.

The jobs of class officers are to create fundraisers to earn money for their class. Class also have their own jobs given to them by the ASB. The freshmen class is in charge of clean up at school events. The sophomore class is in charge of coronation for both Homecoming and Prom. The junior class is in charge of planning and decorating for both Homecoming and Prom. The senior class is in charge of Homecoming coronation at the football game and planning and decorating for Tolo.

[edit] National Honors Society (NHS)

A club for juniors and seniors that excel academically. This club helps run the Puget Sound Blood Drive at the high school every fall and spring. They also start drives such as food drives during the holiday season to donate to the Sultan Food Bank, clothing drives for Tabitha’s House, and book drives for the elementary school.

[edit] Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

The FBLA is a club designed to help students learn about the business world. Members of this club attend business conferences throughout the year and attend the “Pro Sports Career Day” put on by the business team of the Seattle Storm and Sonics.

This club was created to boost the growth of school spirit and raise pride.

[edit] Random Acts of Turkness

A point system between class for attendance to school events. If you are attending a school event that the club decides to take down points at, you reward your class with one point. If you are “Turked Out” your class will receive an additional point. The class with the most amount of points at the end of the year will be known as the class with the most spirit.

The concept of “Turkin’ Out” or being “Turked Out” means that you have dressed yourself from head to toe in Turk colors.

This club attends a regional event every summer for FFA. It is created to develop contempt and assertive agricultural leadership.

Made up of a selected group of juniors and seniors, this club was created to help the incoming freshmen to get to know their school before the first day. An orientation is help a day or two before the first day of school and groups play bonding games and take tours of the school and learn random facts to help the freshmen become more aware.

This club was created to promote culture awareness. Every year during the springtime, this club puts on International Week. The club takes time out to recognize the current foreign exchange students and the their cultures, as well as other cultures, at an International Assembly. Cuisine from various cultures are also served throughout the week.

Though considered a credited class, you must qualify to be a part of the class. You must have experience with computers and cameras.

The name of the SHS yearbook, based on the name given to the sword that a Turkish warrior uses.
