The school is located at Milltown House just outside of Strabane, and the attractive 27 acres of wooded grounds provide a stunning landscape and relaxed atmosphere. It overlooks the River Mourne to the south of the town.[1] The main school building, Milltown House, was built in 1887 and for a time was the residence of hymn-writer and poet Cecil Frances Alexander, best known for her hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful.

[edit] History

In 2008, The current pupils at Strabane High School will be educated at Strabane Grammar School. Strabane High School will be closed, due to the non-sustainability of their enrolment. Strabane Grammar School will have much construction within the next few years to cater for the new pupils. Strabane Grammar School will subsequently increase its enrolment to 650 pupils and to cater for this, the school will relocate to a new, state of the art building which will be built on the Derry Road. Lewis Lacey will, most probably, be the principal of the new academic institution.

[edit] Academic Success

For the past 9 years, the school has ranked 1st out of all Controlled Grammar Schools in the west of Ireland concerning exam results, and has been placed several times among the top 100 state schools in the UK.
In 2005, three Year 12 Pupils from the school participated in a UK-wide physics challenge, in which the team emerged in second place, stopped just short of winning the competition by a private school in England.[citation needed]

Strabane high school and Strabane Grammar school are to join ranks in 2009 and a new builing will be constructed to cater for the new school.
