[edit] History

The album records performances from two shows at the State University of New York at Stony Brook Gym on September 19, 1971. As of 2006, it is the last released recording from the band before Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident five weeks later.

The album makes clear that Duane Allman was the band's undisputed leader: it is his signature on the contract for the concert date included in the album's packaging, it is his voice announcing the songs on stage, and his voice constantly barking orders at the sound crew, sometimes in mid-song.

Per the band's website's claims, the stand-out performances from the album are "Blue Sky", a future classic being played for practically the first time (a studio recording would appear on 1972's Eat a Peach) and "Dreams", a showcase for Duane's flatpicking and slide guitar skills.

The liner notes state that "The live mix evolved from the first song & continued to improve as the set progressed. Great care was taken to improve the sonic quality of the first few tracks to achieve a pleasing audio experience." In actuality, the first few tracks, all from the early show, sound as if they were recorded inside a box of Kleenex. On "One Way Out", the first of the tracks from the late show, the sound begins to improve, and by "Blue Sky" is fine.
