[edit] IE7

=I wasn't saying anyone was lying. Even I found IE to be slow, especially on AJAX-heavy pages - even locking up the UI thread (thats blasphemous!). I just said that unless backed by some source, we cannot put it, no matter what our own experience is. --soumসৌমোyasch 08:46, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Yep. I totally agree with that. I saw a review on a Slashdotted article, days after IE7 was released, doing the speed tests. Can't find that now.:( --soumসৌমোyasch 09:32, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MyWay-related posts

[edit] Myway

Hi, it looks like someone is trying to remove the good research you have done on Myway. The person has the login "Kirk_lawrence". There also happens to be an employee by that name at Ask Jeeves, which owns Myway. When doing a google search for "Myway Searchbar", your page is the first to come up, generating a lot of negative publicity for Myway / Ask Jeeves.

The page "Myway Searchbar" was moved to "Myway Speedbar", which has no info on spyware.

I have undone the move, but you may want to keep a watch on this stuff.

It is unclear to me what the difference between Myway Speedbar and Myway Searchbar is.

Alan Rockefeller (Talk - contribs) 23:50, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

That is correct. I am the director of Customer Support for IAC Search & Media. I'd really like to get in touch offline - why don't you send me an email at klawrence at ask d0t c0m, and I'll reply with relevant information to help you discern the fact from the fiction

  • Provide me with an e-mail address or a telephone number. Is your email ------@ask.com?

Yes, that is correct klawrence @ the search engine (easiest to type), or @IACSAM.com. Please do get in touch.

Also, your company seems to operate many sock puppets that compromise the MyWay articles' accuracy. Also, don't use open-mindedness and neutrality to mask the fact that your products are spyware.SteveSims 22:41, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Myway Message

> The user kirk_lawrence is claiming to be IAC Search and Media's communications director.

I totally believe him. This thing came to my attention when I was watching the "recent changes", looking for vandalism to revert. (for fun) I saw the myway searchbar article get redirected to a page with no content, and when I looked at the users contributions, I was appalled. Here was a real marketing guy from a spyware company removing info from wikipedia about his products, right before my very eyes. I added all the relevant myway pages to my watchlist, and it has been really enjoyable to watch obviously the same guy come back with different usernames, trying to stamp the spyware info out.

> I will probably contact an administrator with IAC's attempts to skew the MyWay article so that it doesn't appear to be spyware.

I am not quite sure what an administrator could do about this, maybe because I am very new to wikipedia.

He hasn't really made any unreasonable changes yet, but he is certainly threatening to do so. :)

Can't wait for the big revision. It will be a big load of crap with some useful info in there, and will need to be heavily edited for accuracy. If it so unreasonable that it becomes relevant, we would need to add a section to the article documenting the corporations attempts to modify reality.

I will always back you up, in any case.

> Will you back me up, and keep an eye on the MyWay page too?

I watch all the myway related pages, even zwinky! I will probably continue to do so for the next 50 years or so, just because it is really entertaining.

[edit] From IAC Search and Media, the company that owns MyWay

Well Steve, Since you won't communicate with me, you leave me no choice but to take this to Wikipedia themselves to get a resolution.

[edit] They're baaaaaaaaaacccck!!!

Our good friends and business partners at IAC Search and Media‎ have returned!

I was just thinking about them today.

The one guy seems to be really close to me, only 5 traceroute hops, apparently in communication with his friend in France who hit IAC Search and Media‎ this morning.

Its good to talk to you; what have you been up to?

[edit] pop-up blocker

Hi Steve... I'm not sure what to say about your situation with the pop-up blocker that can fix the problem for sure. Maybe you did disable the pop-up blocker, but maybe some nefarious (or bumbling) piece of software did it for you? Hmmm. Try this: Go back to the web site, and when you hit the page with pop-ups, an icon will appear on the status bar... second box from the left. Click it and have a look through the options to see if you can change things. If nothing else, you can go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced tab, and hit "Reset...". That'll change IE completely back to the out-of-the-box default. After that, go into Tools -> Manage Add-ons and re-enable the add-ons you want, like Flash or Quicktime. Hope this helps, good luck! -/- Warren 02:42, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Licence is the noun, license is the verb.

Hi, thanks for catching the "news paper" typo on Permissive and copyleft licences, but the other change you made was a false positive. LicenCe is the noun, and licenSe is the verb. This is true for UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand (and India). In the USA, they use "license" for both (and the Philippines). Gronky 13:02, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] argument map image typos

Thanks for letting me know Steve, it also has another typo in the upper right green box: "If more roads were build (sic)". I spend a lot of time on them to make sure that no significant terms appear by themselves (logical structure) but they are all filled with typos. Grumpyyoungman01 05:18, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Office Open XML

I reverted your vandalism on the Office Open XML article. Changing the article to put openoffice spam in first line of the article is just not acceptable. This particular article is often a target of anti-microsoft and/or odf supporter edits and I am tempted to report suchs incidents but I in a quick glance have not seen any evidence on your other contributions of such incidents so there seems no reason for that. I will however report future atempts to alter the Office Open XML article for adding more blatant OpenOffice spammoring according with WP:AIV. hAl 09:33, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

I've undone the revert, as it was evidently not vandalism: please see discussion at Talk:Office Open XML#OpenOffice.org link. Thanks, Clicketyclack 10:57, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
It might seem was was hasty in my conclusion as I did see a lot of people trying to slip in links in the Office Open XML article to OpenDocument en OpenOffice.org and other ODF related articles and websites in support of Opendocument in what is sometimes called 'the office format war'. I apologize for possible offence. hAl 11:56, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Editing Image:Mozilla-firefox-usage-data.svg

How did you edit this image with a text editor? I'd like to update it (and other SVG usage share charts), but when I right click to save it the default filename is "Image:Mozilla-firefox-usage-data.svg.png" and when I change the extension to a pure PNG, the file will not open in Inkscape and appears as gibberish in Notepad and gedit. I use Linux but I've tested it on Windows XP computers and I still can't modify it. SteveSims 02:42, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Download the SVG rather than the rasterized image ;) Since most browsers don't support SVG, mediawiki rasterises SVG images before displaying them ... You need to right click and save the image via the link with its name, underneath the image. Then just open it with your text editor or Inkscape. But if you use Inkscape try to clean it up before uploading it ;) Inkscape spits out a load of crap. --Tene 12:26, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] *buntu Userbox Icons

Hi, much better second attempt at those images, one thing I would say though, whenever you do any more userbox images, make the size of the image (in the image syntax) 45px, for example

This way the userbox doesn't get stretched, oh and also, could make two sorts of those images for the Ubuntu Studio and Goobuntu userboxes, that way all of them would fit in with eachother. Oh and last of all, I can see you have a profile on wikimedia commons, (or maybe that isn't you) if you upload them there, they can be used for all wikimedia projects which is a lot more useful than just limiting it to the English Wikipedia. > Rugby471 talk 06:40, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Ha ha, very good :-) > Rugby471 talk 08:03, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, use these colors ( they are in html value )

  1. 292929

  2. 009bf9
    -Circles

And lose the circle in the middle. Have fun !

Hi, good work on all of those icons, I know it wasn't anyhting fantastic (as you wrote on the image's page!) but it was a great idea and so I'm going to award you this :-

[edit] FYI

Don't worry, deleting the "pimp" userbox won't delete your whole userpage. The reason the deletion message comes up on your main userpage is because the userbox is transcluded on to your page, so the deletion notification automatically appears as well. If you don't want the deletion message there, you can substitute the userbox for the time being. WaltonOne 17:25, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pimp Userbox

[edit] Userbox

Can we discuss about your pimp userbox some? I think it doesn't exactly fall within a good taste and pimping is considered a crime in most places. Someone I edit with insists on keeping this userbox on a userpage just because it exists. I think I could propose it for deletion but I ask first what do you think. The easiest way would be that you deleted it yourself with {{db-userreq}}. Thank you. :) Rhanyeia 11:01, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pimp Userbox

I've added my piece, and will keep an eye on the matter. Best of luck, I'll do more if I think I can. Jay 02:04, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

This seems to be going nowhere. KP Botany obviously has NO idea what we're talking about, and he's the only one fighting against it anymore. What do you wanna do? Jay 05:26, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
If something on your user page is making a few editors upset, is it really that important to keep it on there? Voluntarily deleting the Pimp Userbox before the close of the MfD would be a nice gesture. -- Jreferee (Talk) 22:12, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pimps

I don't support pimps on Wikipedia, and if you had read my talk page, you would have seen that. I am grossly offended by the pimp user box and put it on my user page to draw attention to it so someone would seek deletion. Do you know anything about pimping, by the way? KP Botany 02:41, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Minor edits

Hi, please do not mark edits like these as minor — you are changing the meaning of the statement, which users watching the article typically want to be aware of. You should only mark edits as minor when they don't change the meaning (e.g. spelling, formatting, etc). Have a look at WP:MINOR if you haven't already. -- intgr [talk] 01:55, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Crapware.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Crapware.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI 01:29, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

No free alternatives does not mean that fair use automatically applies to all low-res copyrighted images that might work. It did not "illustrate the subject," it just served to deride Vista (as crappy as it may be). The article was speedy deleted in the meantime by another admin so the point is effectively moot. Fair use is not a blanket reason to use copyrighted material, it is only to be used when necessary. Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria reads: "Significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. Non-free media files are not used if they can be replaced by text that serves a similar function." Besides, I'm sure there is plenty of free software that could be considered crapware. [edit] Speedy deletion of Zunephone

A tag has been placed on Zunephone, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per CSD A1.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. ~Matticus TC 08:34, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Commercial use of Image:IE7GlobeSlash.svg

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:IE7GlobeSlash.svg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:IE7GlobeSlash.svg is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only" or "used with permission for use on Wikipedia only" which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3).

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:IE7GlobeSlash.svg itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. If you have any questions about what to do next or why your image was nominated for speedy deletion please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. [edit] License tagging for Image:SteveSimsPimpHat WhiteBackground.mid

Thanks for uploading Image:SteveSimsPimpHat WhiteBackground.mid. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 06:09, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Internet Explorer 6.png deletion

Hi Steve,

On 5/19 you added a {{Replaceable fair use}} tag to Image:Internet Explorer 6.png. Maybe it wasn't your intention, but this means you requested that the image be deleted from Wikipedia. I've reviewed the request and determined that the image is not a candidate for speedy deletion because it is not replaceable. Use of the image seems to be appropriate fair use on at least the article about Internet Explorer. I've removed the deletion tag. Rhobite 17:07, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] LiNsta Firefox image

Hello, I was wondering. Do you have an SVG version of the Image:Firefox LiNsta.png? I really like it and I want to use it for an icon, but the PNG doesn't scale right in Ubuntu. Losses to much detail and quality when its scaled down some. Theyain Riyu (talk) 07:05, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WHHLPA

Please do not add commentary or your own personal analysis to Wikipedia articles, as you did to Women's Health and Human Life Protection Act. Doing so violates Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy and breaches the formal tone expected in an encyclopedia. Thank you. Groupthink (talk) 05:26, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Pro-choice implies that it should be the woman's choice, and is used by groups supportive of legalized abortion. Pro-life implies that aborting a fetus destroys a life, and is used by groups opposed to legalized abortion. The terms I use describe both groups, but aren't loaded since neither group uses them to describe themselves, among other reasons. Allow me to explain:

From the pro-life viewpoint, a woman's choice is less important than a baby's life, just as anybody's right to choose to murder somebody is less important than their right to live. On the same token, from a pro-choice viewpoint, a woman's right to choose to abort something that clearly isn't a life is more important than the government's right to tell her otherwise.

So, pro-abortion and anti-abortion only show whether you think abortion should or shouldn't be legal, and don't imply that the other side is anti-choice or anti-life. They're much more neutral and more accurate than pro-choice" and pro-life. SteveSims (talk) 06:02, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Obamacan

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Obamacan, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Obamacan. [edit] Speedy deletion of Alexey Tolstokozhev

A tag has been placed on Alexey Tolstokozhev requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] March 2008 Student Walkouts

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article March 2008 Student Walkouts, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [edit] Alameda High School

Hello, I've reverted your last edit to Alameda High School [2] which transcluded the entire Encinal HS article into the Alameda HS one. Please consider using the See also in-line template to point to the Encinal High School subsection. Using the preview button can help avoid problems like this. Thanks. – Zedla (talk) 09:45, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello again, a transclusion will only take the entire source, not a subsection. Without commenting on the content, the best approach would be to write in the Alameda HS article about that school's participation in the event and to use an appropriate in-line template from Category:Wikipedia_page-section_templates like Template:Details or the see-also template mentioned above. Thanks – Zedla (talk) 07:17, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Typo redirect Bill Clinton presidential campaign, 2008

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Bill Clinton presidential campaign, 2008, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Bill Clinton presidential campaign, 2008 is a redirect page resulting from an implausible typo (CSD R3).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Bill Clinton presidential campaign, 2008, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] AfD nomination of Student Action

An editor has nominated Student Action, an article which you have created or worked on, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Student Action and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. 91.198.174.194 (talk) 15:41, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

[Re:your message]. Sorry, but I still support deleting the Student Action and CalSERVE article. My reasons are listed at the AFD pages: no notability, no reliable third party sources, total original research. These are fundamental principles of wikipedia. If you are able to find enough reliable secondary sources to establish notability, then the articles will survive AFD. --SevernSevern (talk) 23:15, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

One TFD was closed keep and the other looks likely to be kept also. A consensus of 4 appears to have developed at Template talk:Ron Paul to merge the two templates (plus perhaps Celarnor at TFD). Would appreciate it if you stated there any further desire you might have to woo the other editors toward keeping both, as otherwise someone is likely to conclude the merge by redirecting sooner or later. [edit] election maps

first of all, the maps I made look absolutely presentable that people can look at them and they are faithful to not only the states votes, but to the scheme most universally recognized by the vast majority of people, and because on the 1980-2004 maps, red=Republican blue=Democrat, and most people know this scheme, and has been ingrained in most people, all the maps should have this. Also, the bars under the candidate names and the text colors in the "close states" section should match, otherwise, the maps are confusing, and so is the site then for electoral maps. People should be able to accurately research with this site, and expect consistency, which is important for encyclopedic value. Not to mention, on this page on this page and even on this page use Red=Republican Blue=Democrat, so how can you have both of those, the maps 1980-2004 in that scheme, the bars under the faces of candidates with that scheme, list of close states, but have other maps in the opposite scheme? It makes zero sense! However, if anyone can improve upon my maps, or make the svg. ones like on the 1992-2004 maps, I'll welcome it, if it uses the universally recognized color scheme. Until someone does this, the maps I uploaded look good enough to be on the site. Also, my maps are ALL png.Tallicfan20 (talk) 08:14, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
