Stanković Cup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stanković Continental Champions’ Cup is an international basketball tournament for men's national teams held annually by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The idea for the tournament came from Dr. Carl Men Ky Ching, president of FIBA and the purpose of the cup was to honor Borislav Stanković, FIBA Secretary General Emeritus, for his significant contribution to the world of basketball. Being the only Chinese president of the 28 International Sport Federations, Dr. Ching selected China as the host country for the Cup. The Cup is organized to promote basketball in that country and to provide an opportunity for the Chinese Men’s National Team to compete with other international champions. Each continent has at least one representative at the tournament. So far all the champions have been from Europe.
The first competition was organized in 2005 in Beijing, and was won by Lithuania.
The second competition was organized in 2006 in Nanjing and Kunshan, and was won by Greece.
The third competition was organized in 2007 in Guangzhou and Macau, and was won by Slovenia.
