Portal talk:Stargate
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ok, here it is. This is just a barebones skeleton right now, ideas and collaboration are very much appreciated, as I cannot carry this alone. I'm taking as models the Doctor Who and Star Wars portals to start with, but it'd be cool if we can create something more personal for Stargate. -- Andromeda 00:05, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
I think one of the most important projects we need to work on is getting a complete episode guide for all three series. Just an idea. What do you guys think? --Mattwj2002
- Yes, we are talking about it in the Wikiproject Stargate talk page. There's an idea to create a style sheet. You're welcome to join us! -- Andromeda 02:49, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] What to feature next?
I need a bit of help maintaining this, so I'd like to hear you suggestions about what articles and pictures should be feature next. Of course, any other suggestion is very welcome too. -- Andromeda 00:41, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
I think you should have Jack O'Neill as the next featured article. Okay, maybe a bit obvious but he is the Captain Kirk of Stargate. -- GusF 23:36, 27 August 2005
- I thought about it, but I also thought than featuring O'Neill after Sheppard may had been a bit obvious. I'd like to alternate featuring Atlantis and SG-1 articles, if possible, but the O'Neill one is really a good option for the next SG-1 one (or the next one, if I can't find a good Atlantis one). Thank you! -- Andromeda 16:26, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
-
- Well, I think (and this is just my opinion) that either Zelenka or Beckett would do quite nicely for the next Atlantis article. As for the SG-1 feature after O'Neill, may I suggest Jacob Carter/Selmak? LD September 14, 2005
-
-
- Pardon for the delay in answer. I'd like to feature either Beckett or Zelenka, but I'm unsure because I've worked a lot on those articles and I really don't want people thinking I'm just going to feature my own articles because that's so not my intention.
- The Selmak article is a bit short, but the Jacob Carter one may be a good option. I'm writing it down. Thanks! --Andromeda 11:53, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Special headers
Before this turns into a revert war I'd like to address commentary on special headings for portal box titles.
- User:Cyberjunkie, 130.76.64.16, (and others) what are your objections to "special" titles for portal portal box?
Dan, the CowMan 20:18, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- There's no problem with originality or variation of the common terms, but to use esoteric terms is poorly considered. The object of a portal is to provide access to Wikipedia coverage in particular areas, not as webhosting service for devotees to those particular topics. Moreover, portals are still subject to WP:NPOV and should not be promotional or favourable to the topics they cover.--cj | talk 23:46, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Quotes section - detail
Should we note where we say "More Quotes" that those are at Wikiquote not at Wikipedia? So it would read "More quotes: Stargate SG-1 | Stargate Atlantis from Wikiquotes" ? JoshuaZ 02:18, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- good idea Tobyk777 04:05, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- Why? I think it's innecesary. --Andromeda 09:17, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- Its polite to let someone know when they are moving offsite (especially when the site moved to looks almost identical). Most articles that have quote lists seem to list a few then say something about more quote being available at Wikiquote. So mentioning it seems to be standard. This is a really minor detail, so if you'd prefer it not say so, I'll leave it alone. JoshuaZ 14:31, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Changing the featured Article
Puddle jumper has been up for a very long time now and I dont think its that great of an article. Currently, the best article about Stargate on WP is DNA Resequencer. It is the stargate projects featured article, and is one of two stargate articles that are "good articles" on wikipedia. I think that due to the admazing quality, popularity, and greatness of DNA Resequencer, it should replace puddle jumnper as the featured article. Tobyk777 00:32, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Featured episode
How about a featured (or selected) episode box? It would give us more chance to update the portal, as we have lots of episode articles, but they aren't really suitable for the main selected article. --Tango 13:30, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- That's exactly the problem. How can we feature an episode, if the episode page has nothing worth mentioning? Very few episodes have good articles. --Andromeda 08:54, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
-
- Well, that's easy... we only feature episodes that have good articles... that's how featured articles on portals work. We pick an example of our best work to put up there. Prehaps having featured episodes would encourage people to improve othe episode articles in order to get them featured. --Tango 13:33, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

-
- I think we should feature episodes which we do have good articles for, in addition to the main featured article. I also think we should change the main featured article to DNA Resequencer, which is in my opinion our best article. I think that we should bring the featured pic back in. Also, when looking at the topics section, it just seems out of proportion. When you guys look at the topics section of the portal, does it seem a little off to you guys? - 1) I think there are so few good articles that we'll go through them too soon. The idea is good, but the practice would be difficult right now, I think. 2a) The featured article changed not so long ago, I think it's still soon to feature another. 2b) I don't think you can give a fair opinon on that article, since you've written most of it. 3) The featured pic was removed because fair-use images cannot be used outside the main namespace (which I think I've told you already) 4) Not specially. --Andromeda 19:17, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
- You have told me that fair use can't be used outside the main namespace, but I don't know what you're talking about. Tons of portals have fair use pics. The main page has them. The fair use policy never says anything about outlawing pics in portals, in fact, the featured portal creiteria encourages it. Tobyk777 22:24, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

- I did not remove the images. I liked the section. Someone else did. But looking at Wikipedia:Fair_use#Policy it reads: Fair use images should be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. I'll be in favour of using images, but I'm not to start a war in Wikipedia. --Andromeda 22:24, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

- That policy was probably written before Portals existed. A portal is part of the encyclopedia, it's not like the user space or the wikipedia space that are just there for behind the scenes stuff, portals are actually meant to be used by readers. I think fair use images are ok here (assuming their use really is fair - make sure you give a rationale that makes sense for a portal, don't just copy it from the article). --Tango 22:44, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

- Perhaps, but the fact is that the policy exists. Perhaps we should raise the question about he policy "oficially"? I mean, force a clarification or change on the policy? --Andromeda 23:53, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'll do it. Lockesdonkey 20:58, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

- I don't think we even have any episode articles that would qualify as good articles in the whole of Wikipedia. They need inline references. Sorry, but I don't think the episode articles are currently good enough for that. Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 21:37, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featured List then

[edit] Broken Links on Portal: Stargate main page
There appears to be two broken links on the main page, or rather broken bookmarks.
-
- In the "Stargate: (Device)" section, there is a link displayed as "see also: actual constitution" that has a target of "Portal:_Stargate#Making_of_the_Stargate"
- In the "Name and Origin" section, there is a link displayed as "see below section: common envisioning" that has a target of "Portal:_Stargate#Common_envisioning".
Both of these links appear to be broken. Rather than simply removing the links, does anyone know where they were meant to be pointing to? Perhaps the sections they pointed to have been moved to separate articles and the links need to be updated? Rmkf1982 22:10, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- The article on the portal is a summerised version of the actual article at Stargate (device). The links are to sections in the actual article that have been cut out of the summerised version. I'll remove them. --Tango 11:32, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Didn't realise - thanks Rmkf1982 21:56, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] OMFG
You people are nerdier than a +50/50 Lizard Warlock. And not the one from Zaxon, the one from Chechnya 4. LOL. LOL. Season 11 is going to be great, isn't it? LOL
- Cydon: 11? Where'd you hear that?
[edit] Updating
This portal is extremely out of date! I've put a new selected article up (Stargate Atlantis - it's a big article, and is of pretty decent quality), I've trimmed some parts out of it, but it might be good if someone went through and trimmed a little more. I've got rid of the forthcoming episodes bit - there's no point having it if it isn't up to date - and rearranged things slightly to balance the page. If anyone wants to do any more to improve and update the portal, please do!! --Tango 15:28, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
