Opened as "St Albans" in 1865, the station was renamed on 1 July 1950 to avoid confusion with the other two St Albans stations - St Albans City and St Albans Abbey. Passenger services ceased the following year, and the station was closed to freight traffic in 1964.
The station building has been retained and restored and it now forms part of the Alban Way, a 6½ mile long cycletrack running from St Albans to Hatfield.
