[edit] Creating accounts with a bot-flagged account

Do bot accounts get hit with the antispoof warning? WODUP 01:55, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, they do. Bots cannot create anti-spoof tagged users. SQLQuery me! 03:59, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
I figured, with these admins creating accounts with their bot accounts, but wanted to be sure. Thank you. WODUP 04:10, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
No problem, I do it myself frequently. We're backlogged by about 400 requests now, I'll probably hop on and do a bit myself shortly... SQLQuery me! 04:26, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ACC

Is it just me, or is the ACC page not loading? Milk’s Favorite Cookie (Talk) 23:26, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Yep, and everything else on the toolserver, for a bit, it seems. SQLQuery me! 00:53, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Yor tor tool

Your tor tool shows 220.246.238.234 and 66.175.73.169 as not exit nodes but per checkuser results they have edited today. Thatcher 14:58, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

They're flapping, it seems. I show 220.246.238.234 as an exit node right now, and I've seen both results out of 66.175.73.169 (on a couple different services...) I've seen a couple hosts now that do that... SQLQuery me! 19:36, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ACC welcome template addition

Hi -

My standard welcome message is at User:KrakatoaKatie/Welcome1. Could you add it to the list of welcome templates? Thanks! - KrakatoaKatie 00:14, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I sure can, I'll have it up shortly, thanks! :) SQLQuery me! 04:50, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Y Done Looks like it worked :) SQLQuery me! 04:55, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bot Policy

And I unblocked with the condition it not edit until approved. MBisanz talk 07:01, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
And, I will unblock it personally, should it be approved for trial, as it is presently under BRFA. Until then, it's username ends in BOT, which indicated a flag it does not have. SQLQuery me! 07:03, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
It does not require approval to edit in semi-automatic mode as detailed by the BAG group in the links above. --Lemmey talk 07:03, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
At this point, it will not be unblocked until approved. So I suggest you take it to WP:AN if you wish to object. MBisanz talk 07:04, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Without the flag, it violates WP:USERNAME. Lawyer over it all you want. SQLQuery me! 07:05, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
The info box clearly states it has no flag. The flag requirement is not specifically mentioned in WP:USERNAME. --Lemmey talk 07:06, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
I clearly quoted the relevant portion of WP:USERNAME when I declined your unblock. SQLQuery me! 07:08, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
And clearly that statement and policy makes no reference to a flag.--Lemmey talk 07:29, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Look, its not getting unblocked until its approved, so either finish the approval process or go to WP:AN. MBisanz talk 07:38, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
(ec)It's pretty clear to me, when it says "Your username should not give the impression that your account has permissions which it does not have. " Does your BOT account have BOT permissions? The rule's there to prevent confusion. If you get it flagged, and I catch it first, I'll unblock it myself. As we're just running in circles here, I would suggest you take the matter to the Admisistrators' Noticeboard for resolution. SQLQuery me! 07:40, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
To anyone watching, this conversation has continued at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Catch_22. (Since no notification was given of that thread.) SQLQuery me! 08:09, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
As I was only following your advice no notification was necessary. --Lemmey talk 08:13, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
No problems! :) I just wanted to provide those following this conversation a link to where it went from here. SQLQuery me! 08:32, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AWB

From our discussion a while back - how exactly do you make a script run through AWB? « Milk's Favorite Cookie ( talk / contribs) 01:22, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Username creation

SQL, you had SQLbot create user User:Dallasmarketcenter, thats a blatant advertising name and I was going to block it, but I don't want to account creation block/autoblock to hit SQLBot. Can you do the block the right way? MBisanz talk 19:07, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

OMG, I zoned out again :( Yeah, I'll take care of it, thanks! Happens occasionally when I'm trying to plow through a couple hundred in the queue... SQLQuery me! 19:09, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Y Done, thanks! SQLQuery me! 19:12, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Heh,, now I know where you must work, cowboy :) MBisanz talk 19:33, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
And as long as I'm yelling at you, what were you thinking with User:Fixerbuttnose (disruptive) and User:Thisnameistaken08 (probably a typo) and User:Rain commodities (a RL business)? MBisanz talk 20:17, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Same batch, I think, thanks for the heads up, obviously, I was asleep at the switch today :( I think, I'll take a break from account creations for a bit. SQLQuery me! 09:26, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AWB

I think Miszabot archived the previous message. Can you please tell me how to get a script to work through AWB? Thanks for the help « Milk's Favorite Cookie ( talk / contribs) 22:12, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I've never used AWB for anything other than the most minor of tasks, sorry :( I've never tried (also not 100% sure it can) running it in any kind of scripted mode... If I have time later, I'll drop onto my wife's computer and install it, and poke around, but, I'm mostly not active on wikipedia anymore if I can help it these days.... [edit] Re: account creator group

Hi - Thanks for the message. I was testing last night and I didn't bother to turn it off when I was done. I'm one of the sad sacks who hasn't granted anyone else rollback or anything, so it was an opportunity to see how it worked. I also answer some of the emails to unblock-en, from school administrators or teachers who need an account and so forth. We've got a problem if some of those are going unanswered for a week, and they often are.

If you don't mind, I have some questions about the account creation toolserver for which I've been unable to find answers. I think I'm muddling through there without knowing exactly how to use it and I may be doing something wrong. I'll ask them here so I can hide my head in shame if I simply overlooked the answers, but you can move them to whatever help page you think is best if you like.

  1. Is there any documentation on its use, like a how-to guide? WP:ACC/ADMINS is less helpful than it was under the old system (and those templates aren't very good either - I might rewrite those). Someone new to the account creation task is going to be very confused if that page is the only help available. With a backlog solidly in the three digits, we need to recruit more help.
  2. Speaking of the backlog, why is that? Under the old system, we had maybe 15 or 20 requests waiting at the most. Is this system catching all account creation requests now?
  3. I've figured out the way to create accounts, obviously, and WP:ACC/ADMINS says to email the requester regardless of creation or declination. However, based on list traffic that's clearly not happening, so does the toolserver do an email notice automatically and I missed that tip somewhere?
  4. What does the 'ban' link do? I've clicked it and I see a list of IPs with various reasons, but what happens to those requests? Is it a ban from the toolserver, that blocks the IP or email address from showing in the request list, or is it something different?
  5. Are the oldest requests at the top or the bottom of the list?
  6. The five most recently closed requests, at the bottom of the page, are not always the five most recently closed requests. I did several dozen requests last night and none of them showed up in that list. The five requests that were there when I logged on were there for several hours. I kept looking to see if they had changed, and I think I saw two of my creations on it, finally, as I was ready to log off. Is the purpose to show the most recent requests closed for other users, or is that a bug?
  7. It would be helpful if the 'admin needed!' requests would show exactly why an admin is needed. The old system allowed non-admins to point out any problems they discovered. I can't read minds, and I've handled a few of those that caused me to scratch my head, wondering why an admin was needed at all. Is that a bug or a feature request?

I would appreciate a pointer to the answers, if possible. I know you worked hard on it and it's way better than the old "list your name here and we'll keep it in Google's cache forever" system. I'm one of those people who reads the manual to the new stereo instead of randomly plugging cables into the jacks, that's all. :-) Thanks very much - KrakatoaKatie 04:41, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Tagging to keep the bot from archiving, I'll have an answer for ya in short while (I think, the archiver bot comes by to clean the place up every 12 or 24 hours if there aren't any comments...) SQLQuery me! 05:17, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Also, I've numbered your points to make them easier to reply to. Hope that's OK! :) SQLQuery me! 05:19, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Alright, here's what I know:

  1. There isn't at present, it was thrown together a bit hastily, and, like Wikipedia, it's still a bit of a work in progress... I've actually got plans to write a HOWTO / FAQ, but, have been unable to get around to it as of yet. I hope to be able to in the near future.
  2. I have a couple theories on this. (backlog)
    1. I think we get more requests this way. I'm not sure why, but, it seems like we do. We get about 100 requests a day.
    2. It's still a newer process, and, has been changed 3 times now. It is also off-wiki, and, the few people that were helping, were limited to 6 creations a day.
    3. Also, this system is off-wiki, and requires yet another registration. Definate turn-off I'd say (toolserver rules prohibit me from asking for people to authenticate using local wiki accounts)
    4. This method is MUCH easier to use than the previous on-wiki method.
  3. The toolserver tool does the e-mailing for you. You can view the messages used at this URL if you're logged in. If you would like to be able to edit them, let me know, and I will move your access to 'Admin'.
  4. The 'Ban' link blocks those IP's or E-mail addresses from using the request tool. The system will not accept requests from banned IP's or e-mails.
  5. Yes. (I need to include a date....)
  6. Known bug, and, I'm not sure what's up with it. I'll look into it again.
  7. They should only be 'Admin needed' when they are similar enough to trigger 'antispoof', but, not too similar as to be marked as 'similar' and declined. 99% of the time, an admin is good to just create them.

I'm glad you asked those, as maybe we can use some of this data in a HOWTO / FAQ... Regarding the accountcreator flag... No worries playing with it, I was just reviewing the list, as it suffers from a bit of a bug, and thought I'd let you know that you didn't need it on your sysop account :)

I think, WP:ACC/ADMINS needs completely re-written to cover this system. However, I should note, that a new on-wiki system that is VERY similar to my present one may be coming in a couple months. I'll see if I can find the relevant info on that if you're interested. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask! :) SQLQuery me! 05:32, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding #6, it should be fixed now :) SQLQuery me! 17:57, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rfb participation thanks

Hello, SQL.

I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the project-wide discussions regarding my candidacy for bureaucratship. After bureaucratic discussion, the bureaucrats decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Although personally disappointed, I both understand and respect their decision, especially in light of historical conservatism the project has had when selecting its bureaucrats. If you have any further suggestions or comments as to how you think I could help the project, please let me know. Good luck with the flux at BAG, it looks like it may be a while until that is sorted out :-} . Once again, thank you for your support. -- Avi (talk) 17:08, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bot idea

Could you help with this:

There is now a new proposal for a Bot to be programmed but using Maplandia this time rather than falling rain. It uses google maps which are a reliable source and the site claims to be the most comprehenive and up to date location gazetteer on the web and I acknowledge that they are too. Given the extreme simplicity of the article creating procedure I am certain the process could be speedied up ten times faster and bot the content of whole countries onto wikipedia. What my goal to be eventually is to have a full world gazetteer evenly across the planet (2 million articles) but to have half decent encyclopedia articles on all of them. This for me is a MUST to lay as a foundation towards achieving this ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000?

[edit] Chilean-Australian. Resolution sought

ATTN: PelleSmith, Pippu d'angelo, Itsmejudith, Blnguyen, Angusmclellan, Conman, SQL, Ned Scott and AussieLegend

I think it is in all our interests that we resolve the debate on the cited number of Chilean-Australians.

TeePee and myself have presented our arguments and rebuttals for some days now.

I thank you for your attention to the issues, and especially for bearing with us in this challenging debate. While I can not speak for TeePee, I would assume he is equally grateful.

But now is the time to get this debate finally finished.

I have drafted a comprimise version here (15:58, 17 May 2008 ) which provides references to the Jupp 2001 estimate and the ABS 2006 ancestry estimate, with caveats attached which explain their respective difficiencies.

Now I respectfully ask if you could pass judgement on my text for this version, with a support or oppose provided on Talk:Chilean Australian. If you have not responded by 20 May I will presume you have elected not to take part.

I myself, and I would hope and expect TeePee, will abide by your ruling.

Thank you. Kransky (talk) 16:39, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

"Although I do think it is in all our interest that we resolve the debate, I still think there are some issues needed to be addressed. I am equally as grateful as Kransky for all your time and effort but do not agree with his revision especially since it still contains information which has been referenced by an invalid reference which has been the major issues I have had with him throughout the whole history of this article. My version here provides references to the Embassy 2006 estimate and the ABS 2006 ancestory estimate. I respectfully ask you view my edit first as I asked first and tell me what problems you have with it before viewing Kransky's revision. (This was the terms I agreed to Kransky before promising I would not revert your revision, as you did not respect my request and want your revision to be viewed first I do not see why I should respect your request and let the article remain in it's current revision especially since you have provided that invalid reference which you have been doing for months). Thankyou TeePee-20.7 (talk) 17:23, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Came by your page from this users talk page which you commented on back in feb and now in may here the user has returned stating it was his brother who did all the vandalism.

This is an interesting IP because its not as if its a college or school, but the vandalism has been so bad the Clown gave it a 3 yr block. IF hes telling the truth his bro. must have been a really bad boy. Do you think it might be a dynamic IP so the owner changes all the time, i have an IP like that. If its static its one of the worst IPs on here. Regardless i guess since all they have to do is create an account. Just curious thats all, thanks Roadrunnerz45 (talk 2 me) 15:23, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, that's a Shaw Cable IP, so, it likely changes about every 3 - 6 months. At the time that I declined to unblock, it was likely still that user. No idea, saw it on my watchlist, and for some reason decided to check it out... SQLQuery me! 04:45, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

What's up with this? I went to look at it, yet it's not showing anything. Is the bot down or something? Acalamari 16:29, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

I've disabled it for the time being, sorry. SQLQuery me! 04:54, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

There is a problem with the signature on the tool. You see, my sig contiains a character "·", which for some reason turns into "·". Can this be fixed? Thanks. archanamiya · talk 21:53, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, unicode's been playing hell with the system lately, we're working on it, but, in the meantime I'd suggest you replace that charachter with a "-" SQLQuery me! 22:00, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
One more thing. I'll understand if you won't, but could you make me an admin on the tool? Thanks. archanamiya · talk 15:11, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] SQLBot on vec.wikipedia.org

Hi, an account for your bot SQLBot was automatically generated on the venetian wikipedia by the unified login process. If you think you will run your bot on vec:, you should apply here for a bot flag. Thank you. Semolo75 (talk) 09:55, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
