What distinguishes the name "Springfield" from other place names in the US is not so much that it occurs so much more frequently than other common American place names, but that the core cities of several unremarkable, small to medium-sized metropolitan areas bear the name -- e.g., Springfield, MA; Springfield, MO; Springfield, IL. As such, the name "Springfield" evokes a normal, bland, run-of-the-mill American city to a much greater degree than probably any other American place name.
