In the history of Vietnam, the Southern and Northern Dynasties (1533-1592) followed the Later Lê Dynasty (1428-1527) and preceded the Third Lê Dynasty (1592-1788) of the Trịnh family in Vietnam.

The North Dynasty was ruled by the Mạc family whereas the South Dynasty was ruled by the Lê family.

This period was when the Mạc Dynasty (1527-1677) took control of Thăng Long (Hanoi), called North Dynasty and the Later Lê Dynasty was restored, ruled the territory from Thanh Hóa to the South, called South Dynasty. The Southern and Northern Dynasties stage lasted from 1533 when Nguyễn Kim served Emperor Lê Trang Tông and captured Tây Đô (Thanh Hóa), until 1592 when the Mạc family lost Thăng Long.

The remnant of Mạc troops then retreated to the North region of Cao Bằng.
