The Southern Steel are one of 10 netball teams that compete in the trans-Tasman ANZ Championship. They are an amalgamation of the Invercargill-based Southern Sting and Dunedin-based Otago Rebels. Their coach is Robyn Broughtan, who coached the original Southern Sting in her 11 seasons with Southland Netball.

The 2008 team was announced on January 26, 2008.[1]The team contains four Silver Ferns (Debbie White, Lania Barret-Chasse, Katrina Grant, Daneka Wipiiti), two experienced former internationals (Megan Dehn and Jenny-May Coffin) and several New Zealand A team members (Te Huna Reo Selby Ricket, Wendy Telfer, Juliana Naupou). Megan Hutton has been awarded overall MVP in the English Super League. The 1.92 cm former Southern Sting player is in her twelfth year as a professional netball player.

The Southern Steel play their home matches at Stadium Southland, which contains 13 indoor courts and a $70 million velodrome called Invercargill ILT Velodrome. It also has 20 business offices and five Rebound Ace tennis courts. The main arena where the Steel play can hold a capacity crowd of 5,750, which can be increased to 6,000. They will also play two home matches at Edgar Centre, which has a main court with a capacity of 4,100.

The Southern Steel have lost a few players from the Southern Sting, they are without Donna Wilkins who has retired and is now the assistant coach. Adine Wilson is pregnant and will be back in 2009. Jenny Ferguson is currently overseas. They have lost the Otago Rebels imports Demelza Fellows and Jodi Brown both to the Canterbury Tactix and Angela Mitchell to retirement.
