The Rhine rises in a mountain lake, the Lai da Tuma (Tomasee, Lag da Toma) above the Graubünden village of Disentis in Switzerland. The lake lies 2344 metres above sea level. It is the source of the Vorderrhein and is deemed to be the official source of the Rhine.
