Sorin Oprescu

Sorin Mircea Oprescu (born November 7, 1951 in Bucharest) is a Romanian independent politician and medical doctor. He has been a senator representing the Social Democratic Party between 2000 and April 2008 and he is currently the vice-president of the Senate Committee for Public Health.

Oprescu was a candidate for Bucharest mayorship in 2000 and 2004, ending up second place both times.
In February 2006, Oprescu also became the president of the Social Democratic Party's Bucharest branch, a position which he stepped down from upon quitting the party in April 2008.
In 2008, after the Social Democratic Party refused to nominate him to the mayor elections, he became an independent candidate, earning him most votes in the first round of the elections.
For the second round, against the Democrat-Liberal Vasile Blaga, he got the support of the Liberals and Social-Democrats, who announced they oppose anyone who candidates against the Democrat-Liberals.[1] Nevertheless, Social-Democrat mayor of Bucharest's Sector 2, Neculai Onţanu, announced he supports Blaga,[2] while the Social-Democrat mayor of Sector 5, Marian Vanghelie announced he won't support Oprescu and accused him of being a "cheap demagogue".[3]
