Son Dexter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Son Dexter (born 1969) started as the protege of Chicago House and Deep House music guru Larry Heard, and is one of the most criminally underrated music makers of the new century. Elusive and mysterious, he has kept clear of the press, and rarely tours. On top of that, he chooses to release music almost exclusively on his own website (http://www.sondexter.com) and on underground labels including Alleviated Records (label of deep house creator Larry Heard.)
Not fitting in with the current genre/racial restrictions of popular commercial music, Son is well-known in certain circles of "music lovers" who prefer music with real instruments, vocal and lyrical conviction, and endorphine-releasing qualities.
Stylized by tasteful guitar use, lilting Spanish percussion, warm jazz harmonic overtones, 'peace & love' lyrics and unique vocals, his original music has become much sought after due to its warm and engaging qualities. Playing all the instruments himself on his releases (including drums, bass guitar, electric and acoustic guitar, saxophone, percussion, melodica, et al), Son is a refreshing anomaly in the current trend of corporate-sponsored 'sterile' computer-programmed music.
Notable tracks include:
- "Painting"
- "Missing You" (2000 remix of the Larry Heard classic)
- "Beauty Within"
- "Precious Love" (with vocals/co-production by Larry Heard)
- "Enchanted" (composed by Son, performed by Larry Heard)
