The PlayStation is combined the world's most sold video game console brand. Sony Computer Entertainment released the PlayStation in 1995, PlayStation 2 in 2000, PlayStation Portable in 2004, and PlayStation 3 in 2006.

Sony's first foray into the video game market, the PlayStation (codenamed PSX during development, currently called PSone), was initially designed as an add-on for Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Famicom) video game console as an answer to Sega's Sega CD. When the prospect of releasing the system as an add-on dissolved, Sony transformed it into the PlayStation video game console. Sony's follow-up console, the PlayStation 2 (PS2), currently the world's best selling console, was released in Japan on March 4, 2000 and in North America on October 26, 2000. The PSP or PlayStation Portable is a handheld game console released and manufactured by Sony Computer Entertainment, as a foray into the handheld gaming market which was totally dominated by Nintendo. Though it did have as much as of an impact as the PlayStation, the PSP is noted as being the most successful competitor to Nintendo in the handheld market. The newest console released in the PlayStation series, as well as Sony's entry in the seventh-generation of consoles, is the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which launched in November 2006. It uses a unique processing architecture called the Cell microprocessor, a new technology developed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM. The graphics processing unit, the RSX 'Reality Synthesizer', was co-developed by NVIDIA and Sony. So far, it is behind its competitors, the Xbox 360 and Wii in terms of sales.

Home (known more practically as PlayStation Home) is a community-based service for the PlayStation Network which has been in development since early 2005. Home allows users to create an avatar for their PlayStation 3 console. This avatar will get their own apartment, which can be adorned by items players can receive in several achievements. In the future the service will also expand, allowing players to have more sorts of clothing or bigger apartments. Sony is aiming for the initial download to be under 500MB. Home was announced at the Game Developers Conference on March 7, 2007 with a scheduled global public release in September or October 2007. During the TGS 2007, Home's full release was announced to be delayed until Spring of 2008.

An online-based service has been the subject of speculation since the launch of the PlayStation Network. Sony has expressed interest in such a system, specifically the achievements, for first-party titles, though they never released any specific information regarding it.

PlayStation Home, as a feature, was first mentioned in an interview with NG-Gamer, detailed by Kotaku. It was officially announced by Phil Harrison on Wednesday March 7, 2007, during his keynote speech at the 2007 Game Developers Conference.

Resistance 2 (working title) is a science fiction first person shooter video game for the PlayStation 3. The game is a sequel to the 2006 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man, currently in development by Insomniac Games, and will continue to be published by Sony Computer Entertainment America. The game is scheduled for a release in the Fall of 2008. The game is a continuation of the Resistance: Fall of Man storyline and will also continue to tell the story of the Resistance: Fall of Man protagonist, Sgt. Nathan Hale, and his fight against the Chimera forces.

The game will feature two campaigns. A single player campaign which will follow the story of Nathan Hale and a co-operative campaign that will have a storyline running parallel to Hale's campaign. The co-operative campaign will support up to 8 players online or 2 player split screen with classes including a medic class, a heavy weapons class, and a special ops class. The online multiplayer aspect of the game will support up to 60 players online. The game will also feature 13 new Chimeran enemies.

Did you know...

  • ...that Warhawk's single-player mode was scrapped because the game's developers decided it was vastly inferior to the multi-player mode?
  • ...that the PSX, a media center that is based on the PS2, was only released in Japan?
  • ...that the PlayStation 2 had the biggest launch in Japanese history, selling more than 98,000 units in 4 hours?
