Society for Human Rights and Prisoners Aid

The Society for Human Rights and Prisoners Aid (SHARP) is a registered Pakistani non-governmental organization (NGO) with its headquarters based in Islamabad.
SHARP is actively engaged in promoting awareness and advocating about human rights to secure the well-being, freedom and dignity of the people. Under this domain, it has been rendering its services particularly women, children, prisoners and to the problems related to the refugees. Apart, SHARP is making concerted efforts to provide help across the board to all segments of prisoners, particularly juvenile prisoners, who are incarcerating in jails for petty offences. These persons are abused physically, mentally, emotionally and their basic Rights are infringed with impunity particularly when they are in police custody.
SHARP is a team of committed lawyers and dedicated social workers, working for the help of downtrodden classes of our society. SHARP owes its existence to the concerted efforts by a group of dedicated lawyers having strong conviction in Human Rights standards set forth in the Universal Bill of Human Rights. These lawyers laid down the foundation of SHARP in 1998 under the dynamic leadership of Syed Liaqat Banori – a renowned advocate and acclaimed human rights activist.
Human rights and sustainable development share a common perception and goal i.e. to secure the well-being freedom and dignity of all people, and therefore interdependent and mutually reinforcing. For its program, SHARP has devised two-pronged strategy for human rights:
- By setting up advocacy and training network.
- By actively participating in an activity, which is designed to protect and promote human rights; thereby ensuring the rule of law in the country.
SHARP is determined to reach out to these ill-fated people and help them find a solution to their miseries by providing them legal assistance. These ill-fated people are enabled to start afresh and positively contribute toward the society.
