Socialist League (Italy)

The Socialist League (Lega Socialista, LS) was a tiny social-democratic party in Italy.
Its leading members included Claudio Martelli and Bobo Craxi. In 1998 they joined the Italian Socialists and other Socialist components to form the Italian Democratic Socialists, of which Martelli was elected deputy-leader in 1999.
In 2001 the Socialist League joined the Socialist Party to form the New Italian Socialist Party, allied with the centre-right. Craxi was elected President of the new party, while Martelli was nominated spokesman.
Martelli get out of politics in 2004, while Craxi led a split from the New Italian Socialist Party in 2006 and launched The Italian Socialists, which since then is part of the centre-left.
