[edit] Location

The village lies alongside the main N25 road, some 5 km from Waterford City and 18 km from New Ross in County Wexford, near the point where the Rivers Barrow and Suir come together. Although they are residents of County Kilkenny, in recent years the people of Slieverue have come to associate themselves increasingly, especially in terms of employment opportunities, with Waterford City. The modern Port of Waterford is located in Slieverue parish.

[edit] Landmarks

A prominent local hill, known as Carriganurra, features a large concrete cross at its summit. This cross was erected in 1950 by local resident Seamus Jones, to celebrate the Holy Year.

[edit] Education

There are two National Schools in the parish: Slieverue and Ringville.

[edit] History

Atateemore near Slieverue is the birthplace of John O'Donovan, an Irish scholar who translated the ancient text Annals of the Four Masters into English. There are sixteen townlands situated in the parish of Slieverue such as; Ballincrea, Nicolastown, Treanaree, Carriganura, Atateemore, Rathpatrick, Ballinamona, Drumdowney Upper, Drumdowney Lower and Ringville. Every year a celebration of local history and music called "Eigse Sliabh Rua-Ui Dea" takes place at Slieverue.

[edit] Churches

The Church of the Assumption, a nineteenth century Roman Catholic church in Slieverue village, is the only church in the parish. There were earlier churches and these were situated as follows:

  • Drumdowney - The church was built in honour of Saint Patrick after he had visited the area.
  • Kilmurray - This church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and was at Kilmurray crossroads.
  • Kilaspy - This church was dedicated to the presiding bishop.
  • Rathpatrick - This church is one of the most recent ones as the remains can still be seen.

[edit] Shop

Slieverue has only one shop in the village, known as Bettys. It is known as a very old fashioned shop. It still can't take credit cards or sell phone credit. However it is known for selling almost everything you need.
