Talk:Site map

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Does someone want to mention the position with Wikipedia and its Site map, or lack there of. The best reference Ive found is probably the page Special:Allpages

I think google sitemap detail is being too much highlighted. Suppose other search engine owner see this they would probably highlight their details and this page could become a war zone.... I'm probably going to do something about this. What do you all think?

War is good in this case. invariably they will expand the page.

about the "The basic premise is that some sites have a large number of pages that are only available through the use of forms and user entries." is a litte bit misguiding.

how exactly can you point a crawler bot to a page if it's the result of a from's POST?

IMHO, the google site map is merely a way to do the oposite of the robots.txt. to include pages, instead of exclude. It's totaly biased on the data google needs instead of really being a sitemap. for example, there no title! a site map of urls without a title! but there's a hint for relevancy.

for me, it's merely a "google pasive site submission"

This page actually conflates two different meanings of "sitemap": first the visual representation of a content hierarchy used in the website planning process and the sitemap that is an actual page of a website that provides an overview of the site content. Those two meanings should probably be separated by creating two different pages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by FredLeise (talkcontribs) 22:41, 2 July 2007

"For example, think of a forum that is using dynamic pages. Google would only return less than 100 result without using sitemap. Once sitemap is provided, there are more than one millions pages result. Since MSN, Yahoo, and Google use the same protocol now, having a sitemap would let the three biggest search engines have the updated pages information." This example is incorrect, and is not supported by the source he cites. Sitemaps have nothing to do with how many search reuslts get returned to a user, rather how many pages google will index. There's many more problems with it, but I am only a noob, and don't feel comfortable yet making the edit Monkeywaffles 10:05, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] limitations

Changed limitations to sitemap for very large website to a benefit. It is easier for a robot to crawl a sitemap than a lot of pages. Acaciz 13:44, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] example

Removed the example regarding "...100 links with sitemap", as it seemed to be speaking about the old ability of only 100 links being consumed by spiders based on limited kb file size restrictions. This has been debunked by Google, as they are indexing pages deeper today and could very well gather all the links in any page spidering. Wiley32 01:46, 23 September 2007 (UTC)wiley
