Sinha is a common surname in Northern India. It is mainly used by Kayastha as well as Bhumihar Brahmins, Rajputs, and Kurmis.
In Orissa and Southern West Bengal(Mainly at Simlapal-the Southern part of District Bankura, who are highly educated and settled throughout world), Sinha is also a shortened version of the surname Singhamahapatra. This is a Brahmin surname.
Sinha is a name also found in Brazil, though not as commonly as it is found in India.
The name Sinha comes from the Sanskrit word "Sinh", which mean lion. The more common surname "Singh" shares this root. "Sinhasan", another Sanskrit word, translates into "the lion's throne".
