Simon Elliott (born June 10, 1974 in Wellington, New Zealand) is a football (soccer) player from New Zealand, who is currently unattached having been released by Fulham of the English Premier League. He plays as a defensive midfielder. He is a regular on the New Zealand national team.
Elliott played college soccer at Stanford University, where he scored 13 goals and 12 assists in four years between 1995 and 1998. Undrafted by Major League Soccer, he signed with Boston Bulldogs.
Midway through the 1999 season, Elliott was signed by the Los Angeles Galaxy and immediately earned a spot in the Galaxy lineup, finishing the season as a candidate for Rookie of the Year after registering two goals and five assists in 23 games. Elliott remained a consistent starter for the Galaxy for the next four years until he was traded, before the 2004 season, to the Columbus Crew in exchange for a first round pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. In his five years with the Galaxy, Elliott played in 126 games (with 115 starts), scoring 10 goals and 33 assists.
Although his career with the Galaxy had faltered in 2003, Elliott seized his new opportunity with the Crew, and cemented his role as the starting defensive midfielder, starting 26 games for the team, and registering 10 assists.
Elliott joined English Premier League club Fulham in January 2006 on a free transfer from Columbus Crew.[1] He made 12 appearances during the remainder of the 2005-06 season, scoring no goals. During the summer he injured a calf muscle,[2] and missed the entire 2006-07 season through injury. Elliot missed most of the 07/08 season but played in some reserve games towards the end of the season. He was released by Fulham in May 2008.[3]
