General information about said user -- in no special order...

  • I am a scientist, I am currently doing my PhD at ICL (University of London degree. The College is leaving the University but DON'T get me started on that...). Broadly, my research concerns Cancer, but from a fundamental perspective point; I am involved in organic chemistry, biophysics and biochemistry. I did an MRes at ICL in 2005-06 in this area, before which I worked in the chemical industry. Before that (2000-2004) I was at UCL doing medicinal chemistry and working to pay my way through University.
  • I am a horseman, though I do not own any and have never done so. I have a particular liking for Showjumping (did you guess ;-) ) but have come to appreciate dressage as well.
  • I am a (dormant) musician. I can still play a bit, but am rusty. I miss composing. I had great fun doing Music A-level and retain a good deal of the background knowledge associated with it. I continue to read seminal texts on music in general as well as wider historical references.
  • My MBTI type, as discovered a couple of weeks ago, is ENTJ. I did the Belkin one a few years ago which came out with something fairly similar.
  • IQ. Tricky one. I have had various tests in this area, which vary wildly in result -- everything between 106 and 140. I have no idea what to think about that so I shall leave it up to you :-)
  • I am tall but not heavy, in case you were wondering...

My intentions as an editor on wikipaedia...

  • Some points seem keenly contested on wikipaedia but I am not here to make enemies. I have a proportion of technical knowledge which, like that of my colleagues, is not generally available but am happy to help clarify pages that are based on a 'general understanding' of a given area, and what it relates to, e.g. lipid polymorphism.
  • The standard of English and English grammar. This may be annoying to some, for which I apologise, however, for something to be taken seriously, it must be properly constructed -- especially in an encyclopaedic context like this one. I have written several extended reports that focus on technical understanding as well as countless presentations (of varying degrees of seriousness) and have been on the receiving end of both of these and so am acutely aware of clarity and conciseness of expression in order to be understood.
  • Intellectual stagnancy is something I am keen to avoid. This involves in my view talking about the less aesthetically pleasing aspects of things where it is required, and as much as is required. In this context, inclusion of images where necessary is also important, but for factual purposes only. However, I am not afraid of prudishness; a 'rose tinted' encyclopaedia may as well be a work of fiction, frankly as it is not in keeping with wikipaedia's current principles: the neutral, balanced approach is something I seek to maintain. This does not mean I wish to be bland, I think that balanced, neutral writing when done well can be a starting point for discussion and debate.

Serious bit over...sorry if that was heavy going. Articles I have been involved with recently:
