Shinto music

Shinto music is ceremonial music for Shinto (神道) which is the native religion of Japan. It is a subcategory of music under gagaku called Ancient Song and Dance (雅楽) or old festival music. Some terms include:
- Kagura "Entertainment of The gods"(神楽, かぐら): Refers to Shinto music. There are two types of Kagura: Mi-Kagura which is the Shinto ritual music played for the imperial/noble courts as well as the main shrines such as Ise and Sato Kagura which is Shinto ritual music not related to the imperial court.
- Fue: flute
- Tsuzumi (鼓, つづみ): drum
- Kane (鉦,かね): small cymbal
- Miko (巫女, みこ): Normally the daughter of Priests, and unmarried. They aid the priest in Shinto Rituals and other tasks at shrines.
- Jinja (神社): Shinto shrine. Kagura is played in a jinja.
Taiko music has also been used in Shinto.
Sato kagura are Shinto folk songs.
