Sherani Subdistrict or Sherani Sub-Division is an administrative division of Zhob District, Balochistan province of Pakistan. It is named after the Shirani tribe, some of whom live there. The population was 83,771 (census 1998)[1] Sherani Subdistrict is entirely rural, but there are four villages of note: Ahmadi Dirga (Ahmedi Derga), Shinghar, Tsappar Kili and Manikhawa (Mani Kwa). The subdistrict lies within the Sulaiman mountain range, and the highest point is Takht-e-Sulaiman.

Pashto is the primary language spoken by 98% of the people in the district,[2] the people are primarily Pashtun,[2] and overwhelming Muslim.[2]

There is one tehsil in the Sherani Subdistrict, the Sherani Sub-Tehsil.[3] There are six administrative councils in Sherani Subdistrict:[4]

  • Kapip with 13 members
  • Manikwa with 14 members
  • Dhanasher with 13 members
  • Mughalkot with 17 members
  • Shinghar with 13 members
  • Ahmedi Derga with 12 members

There are two branch post offices in Sherani Subdistrict, one at the village of Manikhawa and the other at Shinghar, near Ahmadi Dirga[5] The only telephone service is in Manikhawa.[5] There is no airport.[5] The only metaled road is the one from Zhob to Danasar which passes through Manikhawa.[5] There are no rail lines.[5]

The economy is agricultural with wheat as the primary crop followed by fruit orchards and fodder for stock animals.[6] Unexploited deposits of coal have been reported in the Shinghar area, near Ahmadi Dirga.[7]

After the Durand Line was drawn in 1893 there was a large influx of people from Afghanistan into the subdustrict.[2] Since 1979, the subdistrict has received a large influx of refugees from Afghanistan.[2] Estimates are as high as 4,000 for the subdistrict. At the same time, large numbers of Shirani tribesmen have gone to Gulf countries, seeking a better livelihood.[2]
