[edit] Summary
Imperial War Museum Catalogue or Negative No.: MUN 661
Imperial War Museum Photograph of British First World War 4.5in shrapnel shell associated with the 4.5in QF Field Howitzer. An example of the 4.5in QF Field Howitzer Mk I is on display at Duxford Airfield.
Format Description: this British First World War 4.5in shrapnel shell is made of forged steel, with a single copper driving band. (As there are no rifling marks in the band, it has not been fired). The interior of the shell is lined with paper, and contains about 481-492 metal balls (35 balls per lb), supported by a steel disc over a tin cup at the base, which would contain a bursting charge of 3oz powder. There is no nose fuze fitted, but a typical one would be the Fuze, Time & Percussion No 82.
Access Conditions: On display at IWM North
