Shantou University

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shantou University (Chinese: 汕头大学) was authorised and established in 1981 by the State Council and Guangdong government. Li Ka Shing contributed 2 billion HK dollars to the founding of the school.[1] It is located in the hill in the northwestern area of the Shantou proper. The area is 1.26 square kilometers, and there are 455,500 square meters of floorspace. The campus is situated at the foot of a hill and beside a stream.

Over the past four years, Shantou University has implemented a series of reforms from modernising the facilities on campus to switching to a course credit system. The English Language Centre under the leadership of Director Dr. Jun Liu and University Vice-Chancellor Julia Hsiao has been a focal point of the University's push for its students to become "global citizens".

The recently completed Academic Conference Centre has provided the University with a place to play host to world's academic resources while a new library set to open in 2007 will pave the way for greater self-education and research.

The university is set in a location in the northwest corner of Shantou. The majority of the students are surprisingly not from the Chaoshan area. They are mainly from the Pearl River Delta region as well as the Hakka populated area. There are more than 8,000 students in the university with most in the Medical College. There are also law, journalism, engineering, computer science, arts and science, fine arts and design, and various other faculties. There are numerous foreign teachers at any given time at Shantou University mostly teaching English at the English department and the Medical College.
