Shadwell Racing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shadwell Racing is the Thoroughbred horse racing operations of Sheik Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai.
Introduced to Thoroughbred flat racing while a student in the United Kingdom, Sheikh Hamdan established his first racing stable there in 1981. Over the years he has invested heavily in both racing and breeding and has acquired major operations in England, Ireland and the United States. He was the British flat racing Champion Owner in 1990, 1995, 2002, and 2005.
Sheikh Hamdan owns the 6,000 acre (24 kmĀ²) Shadwell Estate in Thetford, Norfolk. His Shadwell Estate Company Ltd. oversees the European division of his international breeding and training operations. It consists of Beech House Stud in Newmarket, Elmswell Park Stud near Bury St. Edmunds and Salsabil Stud near Lavenham. The Shadwell Estate, sometimes referred to as Shadwell Stud, is sub-divided into the public Nunnery Stud, Melton Paddocks, and Snarehill Stud. Sheikh Hamdan's operations also includes Kingwood House Stables in Lambourn, Berkshire, Derrinstown Stud in Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland plus Shadwell Farm and racing stables in Lexington, Kentucky.
Trainers Dick Hern, Michael Jarvis, Marcus Tregoning, and Harry Thomson Jones have conditioned horses for Sheik Hamdan in England plus Saeed bin Suroor who is the primary trainer for Godolphin Stables. In the United States, Kiaran McLaughlin is a trainer for Sheikh Hamdan's stable. David Hayes (horse trainer) prepares the Sheikhs team in Australia.
In late 2005, his Shadwell Stable acquired the Argentina-bred and Uruguay-owned racehorse Invasor and brought him to race in the United States. Invasor won several major graded stakes races including the 2006 Breeders' Cup Classic and was voted the U.S. Horse of the Year and ranked No.1 in the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings. He was retired in June 2007 following a non-life-threatening training injury and now stands as a stallion at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky.
Sheikh Hamdan sponsors the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland.
Shadwell Stables won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Owner of 2007.
