Sergeant Harris is a fictional character from Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series of novels who enlisted because he was in debt. He is one of Sharpe's "Chosen Men", and was played by Jason Salkey in the TV series. He enjoys reading books, especially philosophy, and is the intellectual member of the company. He was eventually promoted to sergeant but was killed alongside his friend Sergeant Daniel Hagman at Waterloo in 1815.
Actually Benjamin Harris did exist. He even wrote a book with his memoirs from the Napoleonic Wars.
