[edit] History
The school was previously Matthew Holland School at the time of its construction. The name change was met with much concern from local residents as it was known as Matthew Holland for more than half a century. The building itself was constructed in the late 1930s and served as a hospital until being established as an educational institution in the 1950s.
[edit] Demographics
This is a mixed school with around 770 pupils and 95% of those pupils owned a computer or could access a computer outside of school. The largest year group was the 2006/7 year 11 with eight forms and over 200 pupils.[1]
[edit] Academic performance
In 2006-07 51% of Year 11 pupils attained five A-Cs in their GCSEs and the average student point score was 340.8. Although in the proceeding year 38% of pupils attained five A-Cs, the average point score was significantly lower at 299.6. The improvement in results in 2006-2007 is also reflected in Government Value Added statistics which show a marked improvement over 2005-2006 putting the college around half way up the Nottinghamshire schools league table. The school encourages pupils to take additional GCSEs to the ones they take within the school timetable. The colleges Value Added statitistics for Key Stage 3 put SACC in the top 40% of schools nationally for the progress made by students in the first 3 years.
[edit] Ofsted Inspections
Whilst supporting the colleges self evaluation that the results in English and Maths at Key Stage 4 need to be improved the Oftsted inspection in October 2007 praised the 'happy feel' of the college and judged that "its overall effectiveness is satisfactory. Amongst its strengths is the rigorous monitoring of standards, which is beginning to have an impact on overcoming a legacy of underachievement. Through the college's hard work a significantly higher proportion of students attained five or more good GCSE grades in this summer's examinations. "
[edit] Premises
Until recently the state of the school was always upon the agenda of school council meetings since it has long been criticised by the students for the buildings aged looks. However, the school has made an effort to change the working environment for the students; they have installed new carpets, new desks, renewed the furnishings in all the science rooms, turned Room One into a conference centre and created a high tech. visitors reception area.
Some students at the school complained that the classrooms, in particular the ones along the south-east façade, get unbearably hot in summer because the old wooden windows along these corridors, if opened, may potentially put students and staff at risk. However, they were recently replaced. The school will be rebuilt in the future as part of the government's BSF programme, but this may not be for several years.
[edit] Arts Status
After a long time of campaigning, fund raiser events (involving an assistant head teacher cycling from lands end to john o'groats) and a name change SACC received its arts status. SACC offers an expanded range of art related options for GCSE;
These are:
- Photography
- 3D Art
- Applied Art and Design
- Drama
- Fine art
- Media Studies
