Séamus is a male first name of Celtic origin, pronounced /ˈʃeɪməs/ "shame uss" in English. It is the male variant of the female first name Samus. It is the Irish equivalent of the name James, ultimately from the Hebrew יַעֲקֹב Yaʿaqov. Its meaning is "one who supplants" or "substitute". In the United States, the name "Shamus" is sometimes used as a slang word for private detective. [1]
