“In 500 words or less, describe any personal circumstances or academic experiences (positive or negative) that you feel are important for us to know about you.” Is what you said. And in response I say this, “There are personal experiences that I feel are important for you to know about me,” is what I am saying in my opeing sentence. Every single circumstance and academic experience I have had has caused this certain thing to happen to me. And what it is , is that I have become this person who is me. I am Me. You are you. Alex Schnaider is Alex Shnaider. Leonard Cohen is Leonard Cohen. I will always be me, and I can never be you or him or Leonard Cohen. As much as I can try to empathize with other people I will never truly know what it is like to feel what someone else is feeling. That is because their feelings are theirs and my feelings are mine. I have the disadvantage of only living from my perspective. I will see other people who are my role models, and I want to be like them. However as much as I become like them I cannot actually be them. I want to know if someone looks up to me the way I look up to others. It is disconcerting that I cannot do that. Maybe I have an ego problem? And people probably do look up to me. I mean I am an amazing leader. For example I am the Vice-Presdient of Students Against Destructive Decisions at my high school, Secretary of my high School Rotary Club and Co-Editor of my Newspaper. (Look how flawlessly and shamelessly I just self promoted myself, I rock.) Now that I am a Senior I can see younger students imitating my likeness and being led by me. Which leads me to regret not being a better leader earlier. THe point is I am a good leader now. I can never overcome being me, I can, however embrace it I have frequently tried to overcome being me. However I failed at that. And that is worse than being me. Being a failed someone else. Like one time in Middle School, I thought I could be cool like everyone else. I thought that I could become a part of something outside myself , part of the preteen cultural zeitgeist. I could used aol instant messenger and go skateboarding, and set things on fire and make fun of people who were difrenet. Unfortunately I was unable to become a part of this, because this whole notion of a typical Middle School youth is purely a simplification of existing phenomena. There is no normal. How could I be it. All attempts what I perceived to be normal could never be anything since that didn’t exist. Now however I “embracemyself” as cliché sayers say. And I am a cliché sayer. Soit goes. There really isn’t another option. If I didn’t then I would be tremendously unhappy. And why be unhappy? That’s a real downer, mate. Just don’t be all sad about that stuff, because you rally can only be yourself. Plus there was a zombie attaac and everyone in my school turned into zombies. But I didn’t. I was able ot overcome this too. Now I am going to go College. This is pretentious or deep. Which ever one it is it is allrright Thus concludes my essay. Yes I know it is my essay, and that is its purpose. TO be viewed as such. Nad that is all about me and the zombie attack and something about middle school. Okay have a nice day. I sincerely mean that. Oh ps I am awesome. Umass is the only place I can be hapy, because I will miss my mom and dad and there are lots of kids I can fit in with. Okay bye 3 Paragraph Essay Intro These poems are similar in their theme of death and accepting it. In Tennyson’s poem “Crossing the Bar” there is the theme of confronting death and accepting it. The speaker is says that he is happy to leave die and leave this world and dealt will be a time with no “sadness of farewell” (Tennyson 10). “Holy Sonnet 10” by John Donne is similar in its theme in that it deals with death. In this poem death is also confronted by the speaker and told to “be not proud”(Donne 1). The speaker in this poem tells Death that it is neither might or dreadful and that it does not conquer all. This poem offers a different view of death than the common view, which is of fear. IT is similar to “Crossing the Bar,” in that it has a theme of death, but not fear of death but the addressing of death as something that does not kill or end life but merely is a transitional stage. That is how these poems are similar in theme. The poems are similar in figures of speech, which talk about death. They both have rhyme schemes, which make the poems, have an easier flow. Both refer to death metaphorically. In “Crossing the Bar” there is an extended metaphor with death being used as a ship returning to sea. In Holy Sonnet 10, death is used in a metaphor, which shows death as an entity, which can comprehend being talked to. In both these poems there are figures of speech. A last similarity of these poems is that they capitalize some nouns that are not proper nouns for emphasis and to make them less general and more personal. In “Crossing the Bar” Tennyson capitalizes the words “Time and Place” (Tennyson 13). This makes time and place be more specific to the speaker. In Holy Sonnet 10 the words Death and Fate are capitalized, which help to make them seem like people. These to poems when compared can be seen with a similarity in that they capitalize certain words for symbolic purpose.
