    [edit] Obituary

From The Times, ref name="times-obit". Some useful info here:

Scott Piering, pop promoter, died on January 22 aged 53. He was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on September 13, 1946. As a concert promoter in the early Seventies he booked the first American performances by Bob Marley and the Wailers. He went on to work for the management company, owned by Chris Blackwell, who had signed Marley to his Island Records label. He became heavily involved in the punk and New Wave scene, moving to Britain in 1980 where he set up and ran the promotions and press department at Rough Trade for three years, working with such artists as the Fall, Scritti Politti and Stiff Little Fingers.
Always ahead of the next trend, he was one of the first to see the potential of the Smiths, arguably the most influential British band of the Eighties. He left Rough Trade to manage them through their first three ground-breaking albums and set up his own agency in 1984. He concentrattrated on radio and television promotions, his clients ranging from New Order and the KLF to some of the biggest names of today such as the Stereophonics and Gomez. In the course of 15 years he promoted a total of 121 British Top 20 singles, a strike rate which led to him twice winning the music industry's "Plugger of the Year" award.
