Saranac is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 4,165 at the 2000 census. The town is named for the Saranac River that flows past the town.

The Town of Saranac is on the western border of Clinton County.

The town is west of the City of Plattsburgh and is within the Adirondack Park.

The first settlement occurred around 1802.

Saranac was established from the western part of the Town of Plattsburgh in 1824. The iron industry was important in the early history of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 116.4 square miles (301.4 km²), of which, 115.7 square miles (299.8 km²) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.7 km²) of it (0.55%) is water.

The west town line is the border of Franklin County.

The Saranac River is the principal waterway in the town, flowing along the south border toward Lake Champlain.

New York State Route 3 is the principal east-west highway through Saranac.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 4,165 people, 1,519 households, and 1,134 families residing in the town. The population density was 36.0 people per square mile (13.9/km²). There were 1,642 housing units at an average density of 14.2/sq mi (5.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.63% White, 0.14% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.03% of the population.

There were 1,519 households out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $45,761, and the median income for a family was $51,542. Males had a median income of $40,315 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,242. About 6.4% of families and 9.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.1% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
