Sarah Greene

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sarah Greene (born October 24, 1958 (1958-10-24) (age 49), in London, England) is a British television presenter, probably most famous for presenting the popular children's television show Blue Peter, from 19 May 1980 until 27 June 1983. She is also known for reading Enid Blyton's Secret Seven books onto audiobook, except for Secret Seven Mystery, which is read by Geoffrey Matthews.

[edit] Early life and career

Educated at the Gospel Oak Primary School and the Grey Coat Hospital school, London, while also pursuing child acting roles, she graduated with a degree in Drama from University of Hull, where the famous slope on the Ferens Hall snooker table was attributed to her nocturnal visits. She then worked in the theatre in Birmingham, Manchester and London.

[edit] Television career

She first appeared on Blue Peter as a guest alongside her fellow actors and actresses in the BBC adaptation of Pamela Brown's The Swish of the Curtain. After leaving Blue Peter, she went on to present Saturday Superstore alongside Mike Read; she then co-presented Going Live! alongside Phillip Schofield. It was during her time on Going Live! that Sarah began to star in a series of television commercials for Nescafe coffee. She also went on to present Channel 4's popular daytime antiques programme Collectors Lot.

Greene and partner, Mike Smith, were seriously injured on September 10, 1988, when the helicopter Smith was piloting crashed in Gloucestershire, with Greene on board. She broke an arm and both of her legs and was left unable to have children. She returned to present Going Live! while still in plaster. She and Smith became engaged weeks after the accident, and married in 1989.[1]

As well as presenting magazine shows such as the BBC's Pebble Mill At One, Greene has acted in programmes such as the Doctor Who serial Attack of the Cybermen, Casualty and French & Saunders. In 1992, she combined both of her talents in a hoax paranormal programme called Ghostwatch, alongside her husband Mike Smith and chat-show host Michael Parkinson. Greene and Smith even made a foray into feature films when they turned up in The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997), starring Bill Murray, playing presenters of The Theatre Of Life, a fictional show which promises the participant a role in a crime drama.

More recently, Greene appeared in the ITV programme Have I Been Here Before? and was also a regular presenter on magazine show This Morning. She has also presented Discovery Home & Health's Weddings Live, an annual 6-hour broadcast which showcases several weddings live from across the country, from 2005 to 2007. Fellow presenters include Brendan Courtney and celebrity stylists such as Armand Beasley.[2]

Partnered with Fred Palascak, Sarah competed in the 2008 ITV Dancing on Ice competition. She was the first to leave the competition, having lost in the first week's dance off to Samantha Mumba. Judge Jason Gardiner described her skating style as "A disabled pensioner trying to stumble across ice wearing stiletto heels".
