Sammy Clarke

Sydney 'Sammy' Clarke was an Australian rules footballer who played with Claremont in the WANFL. Although his first name was Sydney he was always referred to as Sammy and he holds a place in West Australian football history as the first ever player to win back to back Sandover Medals. He is also the only Claremont player to have won dual Sandover Medals.
Clarke won his first Medal in 1933, his debut season and won it again the following season. In 1934 he played the first of his eight interstate appearances for Western Australia, later captaining his state.
A centre half back, he went on to play 133 games for Claremont before retiring in 1941. He missed out on participating in their 1938 premiership because he was in England for military training but played in their premiership side in 1939.
He served as a pilot for the RAF during the war and in 1942 was killed while undertaking his first active flying mission.
