Does anyone know why 'St John' is pronounced 'Sinjin' if used as a person's name? (moved from article)
- It's just happened through contraction over the centuries, with the unaccented "Saint" losing most of its letters and being pronounced "Sn", and then the accent switching to the first syllable when people start to see it as one word rather than two. Proteus (Talk) 19:55, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Regarding all the places and colleges named Saint John: are they all named in honor of one and the same specific Saint John (and if so, which one?), or does every place pick their favorite John from the list? AxelBoldt 23:42, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
- Interesting question, maybe a bit too ambitious for a disambiguation page, but the Rambot article wont help either.

[edit] Reorganisation proposal
At present, Saint John's redirects to Saint John, and there also a disambiguation page St. Johns.
I think this is confusing. Readers are more likely to know whether they want "Saint John" or "Saint John's" than they are to know whether or not the name has an apostrophe. I propose :
- moving St. Johns to Saint John's (because, in my opinion, that is the simplest version)
- redirecting "St Johns", "St John's", "St. John's", "St. Johns" and "Saint Johns" to Saint John's
- moving entries from Saint John to Saint John's as appropriate - this would include the majority of the entries in the Places subsection, and
- at Saint John's, creating a new Places subsection for these entries
- at Saint John's, listing secondary disambiguation pages (such as Saint John's College and Saint John's University) in the See also section, and moving entries to those pages from Saint John and Saint John's, as appropriate

- I support this idea. Every ambiguous title with a terminating 's' would redirect to Saint John's, and each one without one would redirect here. However, I think that people may still erroneously substitute one form for the other. If we didn't have this many entries, I would like to merge the pages and have everything here, but that probably isn't practical. As an alternative, the two pages should link prominently to each other, using something like {{For2}}. --Smack (talk) 17:53, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that the situation is confusing. However, both article are really long, and combining them would make it worse. I would suggest merging them together and then taking a look at what we got. - grubber 18:46, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
