Samuel Addison Oliver (July 21, 1833July 7, 1912) was a U.S. politician from the state of Iowa.

Oliver, Samuel Addison, aka S. ADDISON OLIVER was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1834, and received a classical education, graduating at Washington College in 1850. He taught two years in Arkansas, returning to Pennsylvania and studied law, was admitted to the bar and removed to Iowa in 1857, taking up his residence at Onawa, in Monona County, where he began practice. Mr. Oliver was elected to the House of the Tenth [Iowa] General Assembly in 1863 to represent the district composed of the counties of Carroll, Crawford, Monona and Sac. He became a prominent member and at the close of his term was elected to the Senate for the Forty-fifth District composed of fifteen counties in the northwestern part of the State and served four years. He was then chosen circuit judge and twice reelected. In 1874 he was elected to Congress from the Sixth [sic] District, serving four years. Mr. Oliver became one of the most extensive farmers in western Iowa after retiring from public life[1]


Member, US House of Representative from Iowa; born near Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on July 21, 1833; attended the common schools and West Alexandria Academy; was graduated from Washington (Pa.) College in 1851; moved to Arkansas, where he taught school; returned to Pennsylvania and engaged in agricultural pursuits; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1857 and commenced practice in Onawa, Monona County, Iowa, in 1858; county supervisor in 1861; served as provost marshal during the Civil War; member of the State house of representatives in 1863 and 1864; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1864; served in the State senate 1865-1867; judge of the fourth judicial circuit 1868-1875; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1879); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1878; mayor of Onawa several times; again engaged in agricultural pursuits; died in Onawa, Monona County, Iowa, July 7, 1912; interment in Onawa Cemetery. He married Hannah Towne 1 Jan 1854 and had ten children, one of whom, Cyrus G. Oliver, became a member of the Iowa General Assembly.
