A referendum was held in Russia on 7 March 1991, asking about the introduction of the post of President of RSFSR. This referendum was held at the same time as the referendum on the preservation of USSR.
Before the referendum, the Russian Head of State was the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of RSFSR, elected by the Congress of Soviets of RSFSR. As a result of the referendum, the post of President of RSFSR was introduced, and two months later Boris Yeltsin was elected the first president.
