[edit] Song information
Released on August 29, 1995, it was the first single from Janet Jackson's greatest hits album, Design of a Decade 1986/1996 (1995). The song was written and produced by Jackson, James Harris III, and Terry Lewis, one of the two previously unreleased songs from Design of a Decade 1986/1996. "Runaway" blends hard pop–hip hop beats with influences from Asian, Indian, and African music, and has a similar sound to her previous hits "Escapade" and "Whoops Now". Towards the end of the song, Jackson breaks the fourth wall with the lyric, "Ooh, didn't quite hit the note/that wasn't such a good time". Africa/Nairobi, Tuscany, Australia, Mexico, Paris, and Spain are mentioned in the song.
[edit] Chart performance
The song was another major hit in the U.S. and Canada, reaching number three in the U.S. and number two in Canada. It was a top ten hit in UK and Australia and it was a moderate success in Europe reaching the top thirty in most countries.
[edit] Music video
The music video for "Runaway" was directed by Marcus Nipsel. It starts from in New York City where Jackson is in her apartment. She walks in the living room and puts her dog on the floor. She climbs out the window and jumps out, landing on a telephone pole. Jackson travels away the world and sees many places such as India, China, Africa, Tuscany, Paris, Australia, and many other countries. After her amazing trip, Jackson climbs back in her apartment to be greeted by her dog. The video and its production documentary appear exclusively on the video release Design of a Decade 1986/1996.
