Rowetta

Rowetta Satchell (born 5 January 1966 (age 42) in Leeds, England) is an English Black Jewish singer.

Rowetta is most noted for her appearance on series 1 of The X Factor in the UK, in which she came fourth after Tabby Callaghan, G4 and Steve Brookstein and being last female in the competition. The exposure got her a record deal, and her first solo album Rowetta, produced by Ian Levine and Clive Scott was released in October 2005 on Gut Records but failed to garner much attention because of the ten-month gap between the contest and the release.

Rowetta's musical career began as a professional pub singer, before progressing to releasing two singles with the Vanilla Sound Corp in 1987, whilst appearing as a backing singer on numerous songs. During this time, she released two songs - Back Where We Belong and Passion. In 1988 she collaborated with Dynasty of 2 on the single Stop This Thing.

Rowetta continued to work as a backing singer during the late 1980s and 1990s, including providing backing vocals for Inner City and for Simply Red's Stars album. In 1989 she joined The Happy Mondays as a backing singer. She featured on their single Step On which charted at Number 5. After the Happy Mondays break up, she did not return to the music business immediately, although she did play herself in the film 24 Hour Party People.

She is currently writing and recording with Sly & Robbie (Jamaica), Sugiurumn (Japan) and Julien L and Didier Vanelli (France) for 2007 releases. In November 2005 and 2006, she appeared on the BBC's Children in Need singing live on the main stage with the BBC Orchestra in 2005 and appearing on Celebrity Scissorhands in 2006. Rowetta continues to tour extensively throughout England and will tour Japan in May 2007 to promote her track HOUSE 69, with Sugiurumn. In June 2007, Rowetta will make her musical theatre debut, at The Palace Theatre, Manchester in The Best Of Broadway, alongside Suranne Jones. In August 2007 Rowetta is presenting the 'Drive' show, on Manchester's gay and lesbian station, Gaydio. She has recently become the voice behind the sung jingles on Salford City Radio.

According to a 2008 BBC 6 Music interview with Peter Hook, Rowetta has recorded vocals for a track on the debut album by his new band Freebass.^[1]
