Rock & Roll Jeopardy! was a variant of the classic quiz show Jeopardy! which centered entirely around popular music. It was hosted by Access Hollywood reporter and future Survivor host Jeff Probst. It premiered on August 8, 1998 and ended on May 12, 2001. Episodes were initially broadcast on VH1 and later rerun on GSN.

[edit] Gameplay

The game was basically the same as the regular version, except that the clues were rock and roll related, and there were no returning champions. Originally contestants played for points (similar to that of Super Jeopardy!), but for the third season they played for dollars like in the regular show. Probst was also somewhat looser about the "phrase-in-the-form-of-a-question" format.

[edit] Double Jeopardy!

Point/dollar values were doubled, hence the round's name "Double Jeopardy!" (also known as "Double Rock & Roll Jeopardy!") meaning that they were worth anywhere from 200 to 1,000 points/dollars. There were two Daily Doubles hidden somewhere on the board.

[edit] Final Jeopardy!

As in the regular show, the game ended with a round called "Final Jeopardy!" (also known as "Final Rock & Roll Jeopardy!"). A category was revealed, and the players betted their score during the commercial break. After the last break, the clue was revealed, and players had 30 seconds (and an upbeat version of the Think Music) to write down their question. A correct response added the wager but an incorrect response deducted the wager. The high-scorer won the game and received $5,000 and the other players won consolation prizes. In the third season, when points converted to dollars, the winner got to keep whatever they won, with a house minimum of $5,000 if they won less, while the other players won consolation prizes as usual.

[edit] Music

All of the classic Jeopardy! music was updated to have a rock 'n' roll flair. The electric guitar theme to Rock & Roll Jeopardy! is currently heard during Jeopardy! Back to School/Kids Week, Tournament of Champions, College Championship, Teen Tournament, and Celebrity Jeopardy! episodes of the current Jeopardy! series. A vamp verson of the theme is heard in promos for Jeopardy!

[edit] Announcers and Production Details

Loretta Fox was the show's announcer for the first two seasons and would occasionally be seen on camera. She was replaced in the show's third season by Stew Herrera. Otherwise, the off-camera production staff were shared with the original Jeopardy!. Also similar to the original, Rock & Roll Jeopardy! was taped at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California, but shared Stage 11 with Wheel of Fortune instead of Stage 10 used Jeopardy!.
