Robert Bernard Stewart - With just one match to his name, Robert Stewart has the “distinction” of making a combined first-class and Test debut. Along with eight other South Africans – G.A. Kempis, O.R. Dunell, A.B. Tancred, W.H. Milton, C.E. Finlason, C.H. Vintcent, A.E. Ochse and A. Rose-Innes - also combined first-class and Test debutants, Stewart was selected for the very first match played on level terms during England’s tour of South Africa in 1888/89. England, captained by C.A. Smith, won the match by eight wickets and Stewart’s contribution was just 4 and 9 plus two catches. He was born in Azumgarh, India on September 3, 1856 and died in Cala, Cape Province in South Africa, on September 12, 1913, aged 57. Coming from a military background and educated at Wellington College, Stewart was stationed in South Africa with the British Army at the time of his sole match. His death went unrecorded at the time and therefore no obituary appeared for him within the pages Wisden.
