Robert Parry

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Parry is an American investigative journalist.

During the 1980s, Parry worked for Associated Press and Newsweek, and was credited with breaking a number of stories about the Reagan administration's actions in what came to be known as the Iran-Contra Affair. Along with his AP partner, Brian Barger, he was the first journalist to report on Lt. Colonel Oliver North's activities in the White House basement, and the first to describe the Nicaraguan Contras' involvement with cocaine traffickers. He was awarded the George Polk Award for National Reporting in 1984.[1]

In 1995, he established ConsortiumNews.com as an online ezine dedicated to investigative journalism. In 2000, shortage of revenue forced him to continue it on a part-time basis. From 2000 to 2004, he worked for the financial wire service Bloomberg.

Major subjects of Parry's articles and reports include Colin Powell (with Norman Solomon), the October Surprise controversy of the 1980 election, the Nicaraguan contra-cocaine investigation, the war in Kosovo, the efforts to impeach President Clinton, the Nazi exodus to South America and its lingering impact on the region, the continuing oppression of the Irish people by England, the dangers to civil liberties from new military technology, the political influence of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon and Moon's connections to the Bush family, mainstream American media attacks on Barack Obama, issues of balance in America’s political media, the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and the 2008 world-wide economic recession.

In his article that discussed conspiracy theories about involvement of the Reagan campaign in the 1980 October Surprise, Daniel Pipes, writing for George Mason University's History News Network, described Parry, fringe political figure Lyndon LaRouche, and five other investigative journalists as conspiracy theorists because of their pursuit of the story.[2]

Parry has written several books, including Lost History: Contras, Cocaine, the Press & "Project Truth." (1999) and Secrecy & Privilege: Rise of the Bush Dynasty from Watergate to Iraq (2004).

[edit] Quote

After three decades as a Washington journalist, one lesson stands out almost above all others: false narratives get good people killed and, perhaps even worse, could sound the death knell for the great experiment known as the American Republic.[1]
