Robbie Smith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robbie Smith

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robbie Smith is an American trumpet player from Long Beach, California. He has released two independent compact discs: "Workin' Like A Dog" in 2004, and "Spanish Mist" in 2006.

Robbie started playing when he was only ten years old, and has been playing ever since. His first trumpet was ordered right out of a Sears catalog by his parents. He has performed with a variety of bands playing Blues, Swing, Jazz, Big Band, Rock and Top 40s music.

Back in the '80s, in search of something different Robbie played the electric bass guitar with a band called Slightly Bent until it was stolen while gigging in Las Vegas, causing him to turn to the trumpet once again.

Robbie joined international recording artist, Candye Kane and toured all over the world from 1999-2002. He has performed as part of a cruise ship band, played with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and appeared on The Penn and Teller Show, The Donny and Marie Show, Roseanne, and various other entertainment shows.

Robbie's musical influences include Maynard Ferguson, Chet Baker, Doc Severinsen, Clifford Brown, Louis Jordan, Louis Prima and Wynonie Harrie. His debut solo CD "Workin' Like A Dog" (2004), includes a rich combination of musicianship which includes Sue Palmer, Jonny Viau, Eric Lieberman, and Alicia Aragon, to name a few. On this 12-song CD, there are ten original songs written and arranged by Robbie, and two cover tunes with vocals by Alicia Aragon on "Willow Weep for Me" and a duet performed by Robbie Smith and Alicia Aragon on "That Old Black Magic." He also appeared on "Rack of Blues", a compilation album from Big City Blues magazine.[1]

A Southern California native, Robbie makes his home in Long Beach and gigs steadily in the San Diego area. Robbie plays with Blue Largo, Sue Palmer and Her Motel Swing Orchestra, Jonny Viau and The Blues Allstars, The Modern Jazz Majestics, Big Band Express, and special guest performances with 2000 Lbs of Blues. His sound is pure, simple, and well executed.
