[edit] Production

"Rise of the Imperfects" was the first and only product from a Marvel-Electronic Arts partnership formed in 2004. The partnership terminated in early 2008.

[edit] Summary

The game pitches a series of Marvel heroes and villains, including Venom, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Spider-Man against a series of original EA-created/owned characters. Combat is simplified in favor of allowing the player greater movement, and the game is already drawing comparisons to Power Stone, Super Smash Bros. and Ehrgeiz as a result. The video game is also based on the Marvel Comic book series with the same name, namely a 6-issue miniseries. The miniseries does not depict the events in the game or vice versa, and has a completely different story than the video game. There are even points in the video game story and the comic books that directly contradict each other. The comic does however star the same characters as the video game and introduces the EA characters with, aside from one or two minor details, the same background stories and powers. The EA characters are said to be part of the regular Marvel continuity but due to the games' poor response and the fact that they're owned by Electronic Arts, they have only appeared in the above mentioned miniseries and may never be heard of in the Marvel Universe again.

[edit] Sequel

According to Game Informer's 'Loose Talk' section (issue 162, October 2006), EA was planning to make a sequel to Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Nihilistic Software would apparently not be involved, and instead the project would be handled by EA Chicago, the studio behind the Fight Night franchise and Def Jam: Icon. In an interview with IGN it was stated that the game is not a sequel to Marvel Nemesis and an entire new game, and it would feature Marvel characters (both heroes and villains) instead of new creations from EA. Marvel Nemesis:Armageddon was scheduled for its release on "next-generation" consoles in 2008.[1] The dissolution of the Marvel-EA partnership has now terminated the game's development.[2]

[edit] Reviews

  • X-Play gave the PSP version a 2/5.

[edit] Miscellaneous

  • Captain America, Punisher, and the The Hulk are featured in minor cameos. In the opening cinematic, Captain America is shot at and disappears in a blinding flash, leaving only his shield behind, and the Punisher is reported as "missing in action," portrayed only through a tattered piece of his trademark skull shirt. It was eventually learned that Brigade had killed him. The Hulk is shown after trying to subdue an alien spaceship, when he is shot down and buried under a pile of rubble, and his arm is shown sticking out of the rubble, changing back into human form.
  • On the cover of some of the games, such as the PSP version, Captain America is on the cover. In other versions, such as the Gamecube version, Wolverine is on the cover.
