[edit] First Monday Trade Day
Ripley is the home of the First Monday Trade Day held the weekend prior to the first Monday of every month. It is one of the oldest outdoor flea markets in the United States. It started around the turn of the century at the old square but is now held south of Ripley along Highway 15 across from the Tippah County Fair Grounds.
WMC-TV of Memphis, TN sent reporter Janice Broach to investigate several claims of inhumane treatment of animals. Reports of suspected stolen animals being sold to Class-B dealers, such as C.C. Baird of Martin Creek Kennels, also were investigated. Broach reported back that animals were indeed being kept in less than satisfactory conditions though nothing about stolen animals or the research labs could be proven upon her visit to First Monday. The following is a quote taken directly from WMC's report. "Stanley-Branscum and other animal rights advocates say First Monday is a place dog dealers, like Martin Creek Kennels in northeastern Arkansas, come to buy dogs they sell for research, dogs that it was not clear where they came from. It was suspected they were stolen. "I documented on video and with photos one of the class B dealers C.C. Baird of Martin Creek Kennels buying dogs from people who had not raised them."
