[edit] Overview

The league will start in August 2008 and will be formed from the clubs in its region which do not achieve admittance to the new 3rd Liga. On top of those clubs which are currently playing in the Regionalligas Süd and Nord, there will also be a set number of teams from the three Oberligas below it. At this stage the new Oberliga is planned to consist of four clubs from each Oberliga. The number of clubs in the new league is supposed to be 18. With the interception of the new Regionalliga West, there will be three Regionalligas which will form the fourth tier of the football league system, these are:

The league covers the same region, as the now defunct Regionalliga West/Südwest did from 1994 to 2000. It shares its name with the "old" Regionalliga West, which operated from 1963 to 1974, but this league only covered the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen.
