Portals → Technology → Transport → Trains → Rapid transit Rapid transit is a light or heavy, ground level, underground or overground railway system that provides fast and reliable passenger transportation in urban centers. In some areas trams are included in this sector although most English speaking people do not. The first rapid transit system in the world was the London Underground, which opened in 1863. Shortly afterwards, other systems were built. Today, rapid transit is found in almost every major city.
