Quayside

The Quayside is the area along the banks of the River Tyne between Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead in North East England. The Gateshead side of the river is also referred to as Gateshead Quays. In recent years, the area has been heavily invested in to provide a modern environment for Modern Arts, Music, Housing, Culture as well as bars and night clubs to coexist.

One of the Quayside's main features is the Gateshead Millennium Bridge which spans the river between the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Newcastle Law Courts. The Sage Gateshead music and conference centre is also a prominent landmark. Public transport in the Quayside is provided by the hybrid electric QuayLink bus service.

In 1997 a 17-episode soap opera named Quayside - set in businesses along the Quayside - was made by production company Zenith North (responsible for the smash-hit Byker Grove) for Tyne Tees Television for transmission on TTTV and Yorkshire TV. However, in a brave but somewhat quixotic scheduling decision, the show was pitched head-to-head against the mighty EastEnders and, despite its local appeal, was unable to make much impact on an audience hooked on BBC1's flagship show. Though figures were picking up towards the end of the run, local ITV bosses lost their nerve and declined further investment.
