Pulihora - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pulihora

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pulihora or Puliyodhara or Chitrannam is a common preparation of rice in South Indian cuisine. Puli means sour taste, thus Pulihora roughly translates as sour rice. It is also known as tamarind rice or lemon rice. Pulihora is found mostly in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu ("puliyodharai") and Karnataka ("puliyogare"). Saddi is an old name for it in the Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts of northern Andhra Pradesh.

In Andhra Pradesh it is considered as the poor man's festival food, given as prasadam in temples. Devotees after darshan of the God will queue to get pulihora, such as at the festival of SeethaRama Kalyanam. Commercial mixtures of pulihora are available, but may not taste as good as home-made ones.

Pulihora tastes sour, spicy hot and salty at the same time. It is considered to be a good stimulant for a dead tongue. It is easy and inexpensive to cook and is a good stomach filler.

This dish is cooked on almost all good occasions and during festivals. It is also distributed in temples as Prasad. Some version's of pulihora are made with Un-ripe sour Mangoes, sour pomegranate and Lemon.
